10 BUILD. UP TRADE
Let Business: Hen Quit Quit ¢ Credit System
and Have Bat One Pri-e.
In the following article the Democrat
gives some pointers to the business
men of’ Marysviile that may be read
and acted upon by the merchants of
Nevada City and also by the baying
public thereof:
Every citizen of Marysville takes a
certain amount of pride in the place
and all desire to see each branch of
trade grow. The property owners and
the tradesmen euch take a deep interest.in the welfare of the people who
reside here and all contribute liberally
to beautify and make the city more
healthful and attractive, All classes
appear to agree<in a general way and
work in harniony to build .up better
trade and attract new comers who desire to change their p of abode, yet
their efforts of recent years have not
met with a degree of success that
should have been accorded them.
Marysville has all of the natural advantages to make this a trade. center)
equal in importance to that of Sacramento. Aside from the two large department stores of Weiustock, Lubin
& Co. and Hale Bros. who practically
monopolize the mercantile trade of the
capital city, the merchants of Marysville sell nearly as many goods annu~} day.
ally and at prices fully as low.
In Sacramento nearly all of the merchants and tradesmen are complaining
of the large department Stores, at the
same time many of the property own-’
ers are taking sides against them ‘because they are crowding out the smal)
dealers and closing up store rooms
where in years past -a ‘profitable business has been transacted. In these
department stores nearly every class
of goods are to be had, from’ old junk
to patent medicine. Asan inducement
offered to gain’ new. patrons’these combine merchants offer certain lines’ ot
goods below the retail price in the regular store. One of the lines used in:
general way to cut’ prices is’ paten:
medicines and drugs, except prescrip.
tious, which trade has been greatly
crippled and several ‘gone out of business.
These errors must be avoided’ ix
Marysville and legitimate trade of eaci
kind properly/protected. Outside trav.
eling tradesmen have been shut out.
and in doing this the legitimate business has been greatly advanced. Th.
merchants of this city have shown thei:
ability to compete even with the great
department stores o: ‘Sacramento, hhyiag gone into their territory. and talker.

To increase the business of this city

which are more costly and by no means
as satisfactory, especially to the little
ones, who delight, as we did when we
were young, in having ‘lasses on their .
bread.’ Most of the molasses goes into
thé distilleries, where it is made into
rum, fur. whivh, notwithstanding the
efforts of our temperance workers, the

have also disappeared, and they are!
never likely to tetarn, owing to the!
methods of boiling and the manufacture.
Granulated sng is ofthe same.composition, as far as saccharine qualities are
concerned, as loaf, cut loaf, cube and
crushed and differs from them only in
that its crystals do not cohere. This is
because it is constantly stirred during .
the process of crystallization. The lighter .
brown sugars taste sweeter than the
white, for the reason that there is some
molasses in them.
*‘Housekeepers have difficulty these .
days in finding coarse, dark sugars, .
which are always preferred: for use in.
putting up sweet pickles, making cakes
and similar uses. As they cannot get.

simulate brown sugar by adding a teaspoonful of molasses to each quarter of
a pound of the white granulated sugar.
This combination does as well in all
household recipes that call for brown

it saves thern a great deal of hunting for

In a few minutes I saw him ride up te

the horseman’ proceeded to jab a pole he
was carrying down into the ground,
and, bringing it up, took something off

as possible, avoid the credit system
By doing this there ‘need: be no pre.
ferred patrous nor two prices for goods.
And by figuring closely on profits, giv.
ing the cash patrons the benefit’ oi
large annual saving, the trade of evéry
merchant in Marysville will grow: This
will attract gréater attention, becaus«
small profits and advertising create
fortunes where credit fails.
All the People
Should keep themselves healthy and
especial care should be given at this
time. Health depends upon pure, rich
blood, for. when the blood is impure
and impoverished diseases of various
kinds are almost certain to result. The
one true blood purifier is Hood’s Sar
saparilla. By its power to purify and
vitalize the blood it has proved itselt
to be the safeguard of health, and the
record of remarkable cures effected
proves that it has wonderful power
over disease. It actually and permaneutly cures when all other preparrations fail todo any good whatever.
Mr, McKinley has now 82,627 “places”
in the public service to award. Thése
“places” are worth anywhere from $40
to $2,000 a year. Any good clerkship ic
worth more. Nevertheless Mr, McKinley has on his list noless than 105,10¢
names of applicants for these 32,627
places, or more than three applicants
for each place.

A SOUTHERN Oalifornia farmer figured
out one dry day that he had walked
300 miles in cultivating an orchard.
He thereupon sold his place and moved
to town, where, the Otay Press says, he
walked 600 miles to find something to
do for a living:
