O,, July 18—Francle Shepard, chief clerk and cashier of the Driad, the leading botel in Victoria, has been sentenc.d t6 one year’s imprisonment witb hard labor for faleifying accounts and getting away with $100. Shepard forged checks on the Occidental, San Francisco, while there, for which he ig still wanted, reacb the diseased portion of the ear. Plenics al Olympia There were three picnic parties of young folks at Olympia Park this afternvon—two from Nevada City and oue from Grass Valley. Dancing matters were somewhat mixed up, as the N-yada contingent secured the platform but failed to hire the music in time. The Grass Valleyans got the music, bat were short of a platform. known mining men in this section of the State, who was born and raised in this county, will leave hero on Friday to make hisfature home, probably in the State of Nevada. From here he will go to Berkeley with his son, Les ter, where he will remain ashort time, {n about two weeks Mrs, Kirkham and daughter will go to Berkeley, and the family will take up their residence at that place. Many will regret their departare from our midst, for they ‘are all favorites of this community. Mr, Kirkham has sold out his entire prop~ erty in thie county, and says he has quit mining here for good. In August he intends to go to Tonopab, to engage in mining. Mr. Kirkham has probably done more prospecting for mines in this district. than any other one man, and he has been very succeseful. His hosts of friends regret his departure, for he is a No. 1 man in every particuler,iend will make friends wherever he goes. Work Resumed. Thomas Moran,’ the paving contractor, has réturned from a business trip to San Francisco, and grading his been resumed on Broad street. New Yor, July 18.—Frighteped by the narrow escape of her young son from being run over by a heavy track, Mre. Mary Marphy, wife of a Brooklyn merchant, was st'angled to death by her falee teeth. The road will be completed to the latter place thie season, At that place it will connect with the Narrow Gauge Railroad operated by the El Dorado Lumber Oompany. Fruit Shipment. SacRaMENTO, July 18—Sixty-five cars of deciduous fruits were shipped from this city to Eastern markets during the past twenty-four hours. This is the largest shipment made in a single day yet this year, and many cars more than were shipped on a corresponding date one year ago, when it was forty: four.
