The Poles Rolled On Him.
This morning while James Evans was
taking poles from a pile at the Champion mine he slipped and fell from the
top of the pile to the ground, a distance
of gight or nine feet. The poles started
to roll and one of them came down and
struck Evans on the right side of the
head, bruising and mashing him quite
_ Severely. Evans was taken in a cart to
his home on Wet Hill by Fred Beedle.
Changed Their Mind.
Parties living on Piety Hill saw a
fire at Mrs. James Monro’s place across
Deer creek last evening, and rushed to
al alarm box to send in an alarm.
After opening the box they;saw it was
4 pile of brush burning and concluded
not to turn in an alarm. Chief Engineer Hauley removed the key from the
box today.

Deputy Sheriff Neagle took three

Forprton, Ala., July 15.—Anthony D
Williams, a negro, who outraged and
murdered Miss Rena Williams at West
Point, Tenn. on Tuesday last, was
captured here today: by amob of men
who have been in pursuit of him with
bloodhounds.
. , He was badly scratched and worn
out when odught. His captors say
they propose to take him. back to the
scene of his crime and burn him at the
stake.
Died of Lockjaw.
Stoceton, July 15.—Edward Frey, a
seventeen year old youth employed
on a farm near this city, died this
morning of lockjaw. Last Friday he
fell into a well 65 feet deep and cut his
atm. ‘It was this wound that brought
on lockjaw.
A Placer County Miners Estate
' San Francisco, July 15.—The will of
Abraham Breece, who died July 4, has
‘been filed, for probate. The testator
bequeaths to his widow, Margaret, the
family residence on the southeast corner of Franklin and California streets,
and his half interest in the Breece &
Wheeler and Paragon drift mines near
Bath, Placer county ; a house and lot
in Bath ; also all his stocks, bonds and
securities. _To his nephew, Harry
Breece of Iowa, he leaves $1000; to his
wife’s sister, Mary Bowen, $10000. His
widow ‘and Abraham Halsey are ap-'
pointed executors. The estate’s value
is unknown.
Crocker’s Condition Unchanged.
San Mateo, July 15.—Inquiry at Col.
Crockef’s mansion today developed the
fact that the Colonel’s condition is unchanged. Hopes of his ultimate recovery are still entertained.
Another Heiress,
CurcaGo, July 15.—Carolina Johnson.
35 years old, who up to about a week
ago was a domestic in a Dearborn
avenue home, is an heiress to the greater
part of a fortune of from $200,000 to
$400,000, the wealth of her uncle, “Helte
Sven” Johnson, a miser, who lived for
years in “Little Hell,” the most squalid
part of Chicago, and who was killed
July Sth by falling out of his window.

Unlucky Coal Miners.
‘Corumeus, 0., July 15.—President
Ratchford of the United Mine Workers
recently sent out a personal request to
miners throughout the country to send
him statements of the wages they were
receiving. “Thirty-nine minérs at Sandy
Creek responded that in two weeks
they had earned $5 74 apiece, or
the operators for that period for rent,
provisions and tools was $619 20, leaving them $895, 22 in debt.
{A Poor Merchant is Enriched
Eau Cramn, Wis’, July 15.—1n 1890
while living in Duluth, Julius Swanson
purchased 750 shares in a Coloradd
mine near Colorada Springs, paying
10 cents a share for it. A few years:
later he offered the lot for $7.50 and
his friends laughed at him and refused
to buy. In 1898-he came to: this city
and accepted a position in a shoe
store. Fearing he would have to pay
taxes on his Colorado property, he tried
to give his shares away. No person
wanted them even asa gift. Swanson
was industrious, and a year ago opened
a shoe store of his own. Yesterday
Colorado Springs parties offered Swanson $37,000 for his 750 shares. He will
leave for Colorado Springs today. He
says $37,000 for $75 is good enough for
him, and he will sell.nen
Western Senators Quarrel
WASHINGTON, July 15.—The Senate today tabled Mr. Stewart’s motion calling on the Secretary of War to redonsider his acts in relation to San Pedro
harbor. Stewart and White both
spoke, the Californian intimating that
the Nevadan was standing in with the
Central Pacific. Stewart resented the
charge.
A resolution in favor of the United
States participating in the Paris Exposition of 1900 was passed.
Lil Writing a Book.
New York, July 15—Queen Lil has
settled down here to literary retirement’
She is composing Hawaiian melodies
and gathering material for her autobiography. She is prepairing a book on
the “Creation of the World According
to the Hawaiians’ Traditions.” Some
of the more fortunate ones who have
seen her work-say that it possesses a
great deal of merit.
Half a Million.
Commercial Company’s steamer Excelsior arrived here from Alaska yesterday bringing 45 miners from the new
Clondyke district on the Yukon river.
The men brought a total of $500,000 in
gold dust, the average amount being
$20,000 per man. Nosach large amount
of gold has been brought to San Francisco in one lot for many'years. ‘There
is much excitement over the stories
the miners tell about the new. district.
An American Slanghtered,
Havana, July 15.—News has been received here of another outrage com. mitted by Spaniards on an American
citizen. Oharles Gordon, a fireman,
who was captured by the Spaniards,
was hacked to pieces when it was found
that he was an American.

Examining the Stanford Mine.
Hon.-J. H. Neff of Auburn and Eaward Coleman of San Francisco were
here yesterday and went out to examine the old Oro Fino mine, now called
{the Stanford, which is situated near
Rush creek, about three miles west of
Nevada City,. The mine is owned by
Hon. John Caldwell, ex-Superior Judge,
and has produced some very rich ore.
It has never been thoroughly developed owing to a lagK/of capital, but is
