Calanan, Humphrey expired October 19, 1881; age 82 years, 5 months, 21

Caldwell, Dr. A. B. had previously had a store at Beckville; TsW p79;
October 1849 built a log store on what is now Nevada street, back of
Main Street ravine, causing the area to become known as "Caldwell's
Upper Store"; B&D pl9; location of, T&W p79.
Caldwell, Alexander miner, at Selby Flat in 1855; B&D.
Caldwell, John I. native of Nova Scotia, born January 24, 1826; arrived in
the U.S. age 7; arrived in Nevada County age 25 September 17, 1850.
1852 settled at Moores's Flat for 2 years; owned 1/4 interest in
a hydraulic plant, east of the Flat.
Spring of 1854 was appointed first Justice of the Peace at
Moore's Flat in Eureka Township and again in 1856.
DEM August 20, 1856 plc4: Loss in fire of July 19, 1856 in N,
law books, etc. $500.
DEM December 31, 1856 plcl: office was #10 in the Bicknell Block
on Broad Street, (now part of the National Hotel).
1857 was nominated for state legislature on Democratic ticket,
elected, and served in 9th General Assembly; read law, admitted to
practice in the District Court; engaged in law practice at Moore's
Flat.
DEEDS John C. Caldwell to H. H. Flagg et,al, recorded August 21,
1861.
1864 elected District Attorney term 1865 to 1867; then elected,
and re-elected Justice of Peace at NC for 2 years.
1866-1868 District Attorney and Judge of Nevada County.
NT July 2, 1868 p3cl: Ex-District Attorney John Caldwell has
returned to his old home at Moore's Flat, where he will resume the
practice of law. He has the appointment of Notary Public and his
location in that vicinity will be of great advantage to those who have
law business to attend to. Mr. Caldwell is well known and highly
respected by the citizens of Eureka township among wham he resided
until he came to Nevada to assume the duties of District Attorney.
1871 elected County Judge of Nevada County, served 4 years,
re-nominated and elected.
1879 elected Superior Judge for 5 years, succeeded by Judge
Walling.
Served Superior Judge for 6 years.
Retired from bench of Supreme Court January 1, 1897 and resumed
law practice.
Married 1870, no children, adopted 3; wife died March 20, 1896.
