GVU May 30, 1869 p3cl: Sad Case of Insanity The CARSEN APPEAL
of May 28th, gives this account of Judge S. H. Chase, formerly a
resident of Nevada City, and once Senator fran this county in the
Legislature: "One day in the latter part of last week, S. H. Chase,
District Judge for Esmeralda County, came here. His manner indicated
that he had been drinking to excess, and his friends thought that a
night's rest would set him all right. Since that time, however, he has
displayed unmistakable signs of insanity, wandering about at all hours
of the day and night, talking incoherently and conducted himself in a
wild and incontrolable manner. Night before last he was arrested on a
complaint entered by the Hon. Tom Wells and confined in the County
Jail, where he now is. George Gibson, M. Y. Stewart, Louis Doron and
others used all sorts of means to arrest his supposed spree, but all
to no avail. There are too many reasons for believing that he is
hopelessly insane. Respecting Judge Chase's high character and his
feelings as a man, we have refrained hitherto, fran giving this matter
publicity; but it is useless to be longer silent on the subject, the
fact being that the preliminary steps have already been taken to send
him to Stockton. By this great misfortune Esmeralda County loses and
excellent Judge, while the wfortunate gentleman's many friends are
deeply grieved.
GVU June 6, 1869 p3c2: The Case of Judge Chase. Mr. M. Y. Stewart
has returned fran Stockton, says the CARSON APPEAL of the 4th, where
he went, having Judge S. H. Chase in charge. The Judge labored during
his journey under the hallucination that he was going East. He thought
Sacramento was Salt Lake City and was only prevented from making
efforts to run at large there by receiving what he was led to believe
was a letter fran Brigham Young, forbidding him to leave his
apartments. He was pleased with Stockton, mistaking it for Omaha, and
declared that he was going to purchase the asylum for his residence.
It is the opinion of the Resident Physician of the asylum that he is
hopelessly insane.
