DI August 9, 1876 p2cl: The Anthony House Fire. We learn the
following particulars of the Anthony House fire, fram the GV UNION: We
mentioned last Sunday, that a fire broke out at the Anthony House last
Friday and destroyed all the buildings at that well known ranch. We
have since learned that the loss was very heavy, although we have not
heard any complete estimation of it. The fire broke out in the store
kept by William Westerfield, and he saved nothing. He was asleep in
the store, although it was three o'clock in the afternoon and he
barely escaped with his life. He lost between $12,000 and $15,000 most
of which was in United States bonds. Westerfield is a very saving man
and had money hid in various secret places of the store. All that in
paper money is of course destroyed, but he has recovered considerable
coin in a melted condition, by paning out the ashes. The barn filled
with hay of this year's crop was consumed, and hogs and chickens in
the barnyard were burned to death. The family residing in the main
building, kept as a hotel, lost everything, not having time to save
even their clothing. The Anthony House was settled in 1849 by S. P.
French and itis still his property.
