Duryea, William H. DEEDS Book 6 p391 Wm. Bloomers to W. C. Dureyea, recorded July 12, 1860. IW Research Notes: William H. Duryea in 1869 began buying up all the gold mines around Red Dog, thereby causing the many "small" miners who sold to him to leave the area, thereby reducing the business of the merchants in that previously prosperous town, so that, one by one, they also left town (in most cases tearing down their buildings and taking them with then). This caused the town to become rapidly abandoned. The few merchants who sold their buildings and the lots on which they stood sold to Duryea, who obviously intended to mine the ground on which the business district had stood, since it still is gold-bearing gravel (he never did mine it out, it is still there). Wm Duryea left Red Dog about 1875 with a very large fortune fran gold taken from the Red Dog and other mines. The Deed, by which he disposed of his last piece of Red Dog property was date-lined San Francisco, although he may have been only stopping there while he cleaned up his affairs, before going back to his home in the eastern states. This last DEED from San Francisco was buying the last operating store and lot from its two owners who were and had been for years, the local Justice of the Peace and local Constable, and who would have the TOWN RECORDS of Red Dog in their possession, since almost everybody else had left the town by that time (1871). Duryea, specifically states in this last Deed that all Records, Books, Accounts, Papers etc. are to be transmitted to him, along with the store. Mr. White felt that these records would be of historical significance if they could be found. NI September 9, 1866 p3cl: Nevadan Injured. A San Francisco telegram to the SACRAMENTO UNION of yesterday, says that Duryea of Nevada City (we suppose it should be Wn. Duryea of Red Dog.) was thrown out of a carriage on Montgomery Street, on Friday and badly injured, his upper lip being cut open, and his head striking the steps of a building with such force as to render him insensible.
