DEM April 8, 1857: ATTACHED An attachment was levied on Monday
upon the property of Abbott & Edwards, furniture dealers of this place
at the suit of Whitney & Co. of San Francisco, etc.
Abbott, John Carpenter born in Windsor County, Vermont, in 1820 and was
brought up to the trade of carpenter. Left New York City for CA on
December 1, 1849, reaching San Francisco January 21, 1850; arrived in
Nevada City February 18, 1850. For several years worked in all the
best paying ravines and diggins in the vicinity; in the Blind Ravine,
that comes down through Nevada City from Oregon Hill in the Coyote
diggings, at Wood's Ravine, one day washed out forty-two ounces of
gold, on several occasions taking out as much as $500 or even $1000 to
the pan. In the winter of 1852 he opened a grocery store, and previous
to that had been one of the city police. Suffered large losses in the
great fire of 1856 and 1858. In 1855 started a cabinet and furniture
business, and at the same time had a bakery. In 1863 he was burned out
again, the went into carpentering and contracting. He was held in high
esteem in the community, was Town trustee for several terms. He was
married at San Francisco in 1861 to Miss Mary Call a native of New
Hampshire. They had two sons, Wilfred, a carpenter in adult life who
worked with his father; Ira Warren became a blacksmith in San
Francisco. Member in high standing of IOOF, belonging to the Mistletoe
Encampment, No. 47 and being P. G. of Oustomah Lodge, No. 16 of Nevada

DEM August 20, 1856 p2c6: Accident of Abbott on August 16, 1856;
he was riding on stage on the outside, a man next to him fell asleep;
as the stage passed over a stone, the man leaned suddenly against Mr.
A., knocking him to the ground; one wheel passed over his arm, the
other grazed his head; he escaped serious injury but was severely
bruised.

DEM March 9, 1859 p2cl: The brick building of J. C. Abbott on the
corner of Pine and Cammercial Streets and the vacant lot on the
opposite corner were disposed of yesterday at Sheriff's sale for $50.
The property was purchased by Mr. Kelsey who holds mortgages on the 2
lots amounting to about $13,000.
