Tuesday night last at 9 o'clock, Josephus Perrine Blanks, M. D. departed this life. Dr. Blanks came to GV early in 1850, and at first engaged in mining. He was one of the first of the miners who worked on Grass Valley Slide. In 1855 he purchased the Winchester Drug Store, and commenced the practice of medicine, to which profession he had been educated. He graduated in medicine in 1848, and practiced a year before coming to California. He continued to practice medicine, with success, except at short intervals, in GV until his last illness. He sold out of the drug business in 1860. In 1867 Dr. Blanks visited Europe with especial reference to the study of his profession, and he returned to GV in February 1868, where, and since when, he has been constantly engaged. Dr. Blanks was not only one of our oldest settlers, but one of our best citizens. In character he was singularly quiet and unobtrusive. always a calm, quiet and charitable gentleman. His life was one of purity, and his death is lamented by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves a wife and an infant son who have the deepest sympathy of our whole population, in their bereavement. The remains will be taken to Lone Mountain Cemetery, San Francisco, for final interment. Obsequies will be observed today. 36
