(Now known as the Lola Montez Cottage) Reference (1) p345: Native of Southampton, Massachusetts, born February 9, 1824. His grandfather Zadok Bosworth, was a Revolutionary hero, taking part in the battle of White Plains under Washington. His father, also named Zadok took part in the war of 1812. Attended Union College where he graduated July 27, 1851; one of his college mates was Chester A. Arthur, who became President of the United States they were fellow members of the celebrated Greek letter society, the Psi Upsilon. Arrived in GV in 1852. He was the pioneer of the Alta Hill diggings, putting the first Cornish pump into operation on his works. Became deputy postmaster of Grass Valley under J. J. Sykes and the Postmaster in 1884 for four years. He was appointed again in 1890. Married Miss Emma Lansing of Schenectady, New York; they had eight children, all born in GV. Member of the Masonic order; hame was on Mill Street in GV. Undated clipping in a scrapebook LIB titled: S. D. Bosworth. Brief life Sketch of a Grass Valley Pioneer. As briefly announced in yesterday's TIDINGS, S. D. Bosworth died during the afternoon. He had been seriously ill for several weeks, having been a victim of heart disease, which assumed a fatal form shortly before his demise. In the death of Mr. Bosworth, Grass Valley loses a respected citizen who had been identified with her interests for many years. Deceased was a native of Massachusetts and came to California with the Argonauts of '49. He arrived in Grass Valley in 1852 and engaged in gravel mining with George D. Roberts and others. He was part owner in the gravel claim on Alta Hill and was later associated with A. B. Brady in quartz mining ventures. He was also for several terms postmaster of Grass Valley and previously was deputy under the Hon. John Sykes. He filled every position of trust to which he was assigned with credit and honor ot himself and to the satisfaction of the community in which he lived, being a high-minded and cultured gentleman. 52
