CHEHALIS, Washington, July 15—The body of Merrill, who escaped from the Oregon penitentiary with Tracey, has. been found, A bullet wound in the back shows that he was killed in the duel described by Tracey. The body is badly decomposed but is still recognizable. He was last seen alive on June 26th. ; Tracey is still out of reach of his pursuers, and is doing about as he pleases. A TONE DESTROYED. A Fine Home. On the shores of Lake Tahoe, Pe WwW, cian and one of its most esteemed citizens, breathed his last and passed to the great beyond. Although his death had been expected, the announcement of his demise was a painful shock to his many intimate friends, and has caused a general feeling of sadness to prevail in this community. . The Doctor had been ill with a complication. of diseases for some time, but by perseverance and strong will power suc‘ceeded up to about six ‘months ago in attending to his professional duties. The immediate cause of his death was a general breaking down of his entire physical system. At the time of his death the Doctor was in his seventy-fifth year. : Besides a loving and devoted wife the deceased leaves a _step-son, Dr. Henry S. Welch; a step-daughter, Mrs. V. L. Hinkson; anda grandson, Dr. Addison C. Hi a-host of friends to mourn. him. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the family residence on Aristocracy Hill, at 4 o’clock, Rev. 'W. A. Rimer officiating, at which time the Masonic fra« ternity, of which deceased was a member, will also hold services. On Thursday morning, at 9 o'clock, the remains will leave here for San Francisco, for cremation. For a great many years, and up to the time of his death Dr. Hunt has been County Physician, and as a token of} respect the flag on the Courthouse has been placed at half-mast. : Dr. Hunt was born in Her * . kimer County, New York, in 1828. He attended the common schools, and later worked in a machine shop, but did not learn the trade thoroughly; He also worked with a surveyor for three years. In 1847 he commenced to read medicine with his brother, Dr. Harvey Hunt, at Utica, New York, receiving his medical education at Geneva Medical College, N. Y , Castleton Medical College, Utica, N. Y., and Albany Medical College, N. Y. Immediately upon the completion of his professioaal studies, in 1850, he decided to come to the new El Dorado, via the Isthmus of Panania, and upon arriving in California he ‘started for the mines, taking the only means of transportation offered by the times, namely, ox team from Sacramento to Caldwell’s Upper Store, afterwards Nevada City, arriving about the first of May, 1850. He was engaged in mining and lumbering for about two years, and then went into the drug business with the late E. F. Spence, on Commercial street, Since 1853 Dr. Hunt has been in active practice continuously and has been very successful, being regarded as one of the best physicians in the State. He has been county physician since 1859, and in this capacity has superintended the entire management of the Nevada County Hospital, which has the repntation of being one of the best institutions of the kind in the State, and which standard of perfection has been attained through the Doctor's untiring work and efforts. Doctor Hunt has been a director of the Citizens Bank since its incorporation and has always taken a deep interest in the welfare and prosperity of our city. His influence and assistance in helping to promote either public or private measures, have always been recognized and solicited, and when once his interest or Sympathy was enlisted in any cause, he has always given his best efforts to secure the success desired. His integrity and uprightness were beyond reproach, and his friendship was of that true type that all who enjoyed it appreciated its worth. He always cherished a kind and tender feeling of sympathy for those of his many patients and friends whom, he knew to be in adverse or straightened circumstances and his many acts of unostentatious charity to the unfortunate are known only by the recipients and his most intimate friends in whom he confided In Nevada City* his name has for nearly half a century been a household word, and thousands of the sick and affiicted who have during this long period been admininistered to by him at one time or another will ever reserve in memory’s storehouse one of the choicest nooks for Dr. Hunt. Dr. Hunt has passed from this life, but the memory of his many kiuds deeds which emanated from a great heart full of love and charity to his fellow men will always live in the hearts of the people of Nevada county. There is not in this community a man who more richly deserved the great success he met with during his eventful life, and no other man has‘ever been taken from public life in our midst who will be more universally Dr. R. M. Hunt. ) cree Good Meats, “C. C. C.” on Every Tablet. Colley Brothers have the very best; Egery tablet of Cascarets Candy at tees ne SOA veel om band's . Casartic bears thé famous C.C. C.
