Regarding the effect of this enormous deféction in the Democratic,
journalistic ranks opinions are divided. .
The silver men claim it will result in

‘The only paper in the country that‘

the Democratic party is the Sacramento .
Bee,-oue—of the craniiest — papers~ in’
California. It can hardly be called a
Republican sheet, for two years ago the .

Late Tuesday night a burglar tried
to gain entrance to a dwelling house
on Broad ‘street by prying up a bedroom window. ‘The noise awakened
the lady who was sleeping in the room
and she game the alarm to other members of the household. One of the men
folks grabbed a pistol and rushed out,
just in time to see’a man going out the
front gate.: The would-be burglar ran
down the street as fast as his legs
could ¢arry him.
There are several hard-looking characters around town that will bear close
watching, and it behooves every oné to
be on the look out for footpads, housebreakers and sneak thieves. . Keep a
loaded pistol or shotgun near at hand
and sleep with one eye open. If the
occasion arises to use them on a. burglar, do so cautiously but with determination.
Piece of Carlessness.
Through a remarkable piece of carelessness on the part of a young man
named Belzart, near Marshall, -Minn.,
day before yesterday two girls were
killed and a, third seriously wounded.
Belzart was herding cattle near his
home, and his two sisters and his niece
named Dunholland went out:where he
was. He suggested some sort ofa game
and tied the three girls with a rope,
one end of which was tied toa saddle
on his pony. ‘The pony became scared
and ran away, choking to death Miss
Dunholland and one of the Belzart
girls. The other may recover.
interesting Meeting.
The public. meeting at the Theater
last evening under the auspices of Nevada City Lodge, No. 52, A.O. U. W.,
was well attended and the exercises
were heartily appreciated by all, An
interesting address was delivered by
Grand Master Workman Vinter of San
Jose, hisremarks being both entertaining and instructive, and it is saf€ to
presume that the address did much
good for the order of which Mr. Vinter "==
. is the chief representative in this State.
The musical numbers that were rendered by local talent were duly appreciated, at
The Bcapccacenakel Meeting.
There was a good 00d attendance at: the
probationers’ meeting at the vestry of
the Methodist Church last evening to
listen to the address delivered by Rev.
G. H. Van Yleit of Newcastle. The
subject of the reverend: gentleman's
iremarks was, “Who Are the Right‘eous?” Heis an earnest, interesting
speaker, and was attentively listened
_ to by those present.

‘The man who stopped and robbed
Detective Thomas Gibson and Charles
Sladky, of San Francisco, out on the
San Juan road three miles from’ this
city, on Tuesday forenoon, has not yet
been captured. No clew to him has
yet been obtained. A man answering
his description was given something to
eat at two or three places in the immediate neighborhood on that day and!
the day previous, but nobody seems to
know: where he went. Several people
in town remember seeing a man around
of that description, but are not positive as to all the details. For instance;
one man is certain except as to the hat,
while another thinks the man he saw
was not quite so tall, and so on.

THERE is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remediés, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced itincurable. Science
has proven catarrh to be a constitutio , and therefore requires
constitutional treatment. THall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured, by F. Jd.
