" Laurél Parlor, No.6, N D.G.W., will
type nervous women and girls take to locking the doors with
special care. They are-afraid of being left alone of nights
and they shudder if the door bell rings as if they expected
murderous men to come banging at the doors asking for a
chance to come in-and crunch their bones. This is nonsense,
of course, tor everybody knows that murders are not done in
any such formal fashion.
“But I notice that as many'young girls may be found
floating around the railway stations as before, I never go
to the train without seeing at least two or three girls, young
enough to be in short dresses, promenading the platform in
an aimless way which tells that they haye no particular business there except to be seen and to see. ‘ They are good girls
apparently, but are looking for a bit of fun; a little excitement, the thrill of seeing strangers come and go, anda
chance to indulge in what they may think is harmless flirthtion.
“If I had a daughter I’d be willing to take chances on
unlocking doors and doorbells which ring at night, but I’d
certainly beware of the railroad station habit. I never knew
of any good to come of it to either women or girls, and it
opens 'the way for untold harm to any girl.”

F David B. Hill speaks to the Democracy as the Prophet
Isaiah spoke to erring Israel, Grover Cleveland speaks
Sas Jeremiah did of old. Jerusalem must be destroyed,
Zion laid-a waste; “Democracy
be pulled down because it has become the abode of strange
gods and the shrine of strange rites. Says Mr. Cleveland:
“Let us not forget, however, that it is not in the search
of new and gaudy issues, nor the interpretation of strange
visions that a strong and healthy Democracy displays its
splendid power. Awmnvther party may thrive on the evershitting treatment of the ever-shifting moods of popular
play upon unreasoning
prejudice and selfish anticipation—but the Democratic party
never,“ .
The Ex-President may have hopes, but his faith cannot be strong. His mind harks back to the past rather than
reaches into the future. His party is searching for “new and
gaudy issues,” it still sees “strange visions,” and turns for
inspiration to the Mountains of Moab rather than Moriah.
Its policy is shifting, evanescent and contradictory, a cheap
medley of opportunist propositions and economic fallacies.
It still cheers for Bryan and hears of Samuel J. Tilden
with glassy eyes and unkindled remembrance. Aspostasy
aud political degeneracy have hopelessly corrupted the party
of Jefferson, Jackson, Tilden and Cleveland, and the older
and simpler faith has no power to move. It is hopelessly ad!
dicted to visions, spasms and thé laying on of hands. Mr.
Cleveland is like the Apostle Paul preaching to the worship.
pers of Isis. They hear but do not understand. The sun
of Democracy set with Grover Cleveland.
