THE TRANSCRIPT, Sundayeand Legs! Holts hays by ‘BROWN &. CALKINS. . a Le 8. CALRINB, 6 JULY. 175, 18994} PASSING oP ik PIONEER: Go. Wilkins, Pormerly of Nevada Goun4, Pays Nuar's. Deb. An flesh is grass, and the longest pa of life seems but a day. Col. J. F. Wilkins, dating back almost to the beginning of this certury, bas passed his » short span of lite, and at 1 o’elock Friday morning, Joly 14th, a noble soul sped its way to that. bourne of which we know so.little, but on «whose shores’ we must all Batber. Col, Wilrins was born, in ’ Rébtooky . on April 9, 1813. In 1849 he married Mise Sallie E. Shackleford, who ‘survives him. « the plains in an ox wagon to California, and in October of that year settied. on Grand Island, in Colnsa county, at what is known. as Wilkins’ Slough. He was a merchant in Kentucky, but he began farming in California. He was County Judge in 1861 and 1862 and in 1871 he was elected County Clerk and held the office dur. ing 1872-3. They had three children born to them on their Grand Island home—Mrs. Richard Bayne, Mrs. B. B. Glascock and. Frank Wilkins. They have made Colusa county their home since its first settlement, except a while, from 1863 to 1866, when he was for a time in Nevada City and then in Grass Valley. The family has been on the home place, where he died, just across the river from Colusa, since 1870. Col. Wilkins was one of the old style Kentucky gentlenien—honest, sincere, ‘geniul—and his hospitality knew no bounds; the latch string was ever on the outside. Hé was a Christian gentleman whose life illustrated his faith, and the atmosphere around him was one of morality and virtue. Wouid that more of us might follow in his footsteps. Full of years, as the world goes, he has passed to the side of that majority at whose side all the teeming millions, now struggling for existence, and, at most a little brief fame, must soon join him. May we be as well prepared. race eters a SOE OUR NORTHERN NEIGHBORS. Newsy Items Gathered From Saturday's Downieville Messenger. A pleasant feature of the evening was the presentation of jeweled pin to Miss Ida Aiken as a token of regard by the members of the Parlor. Judge Smith was in Quincy this week, where he occupied the Superior Bench of Plumas county in cases in. which Judge McLaughlin is disqualified. Several complaints -have lately been made about the obstruction and destruction of roads. Perhaps it is not generally known that such acts are crimes. The placing of an obstruction on a public road isa misdemeanor, and the malicious injury of a public road or a private-road laid out by authority of law is a felony punishable by imprisonment in the State Prison: What is Shiloh?
