J, BRAND Broad Street. oe of See our line o» Souvenr Spoons The new comet was plainly visible last evening in Nevada City to anyone with fairly good eyesight, and with ordinary opera glasses it was unmistakably in the field of viston. Quite a number of our people are making. nightly observations of the celestial visitor and keeping tab on the progress the luminary ig making in its flight through space. In the twenty-four hours from Wednesday evening to Thursday evening there was a marked change in ite position. It had moved northwestward about five degrees, rather than soufhwestward, as it had been scheduled to do when the stranger was first observed and watched by astronomers. The new comet is daily growing brighter, and tonight it will be more plainly visible¢han it was last night, and we are assured that within a few weeke it will rank as the biggest comet seen since 1898. To find the comet, tonight at about half-past eight. o’olock you must face toward the northeast and about twothirds of the distance up from the horizon to the zenith you will see -two large stars about the brightness and
distance apart of the pointers in the great. dipper. The new comet last night formed almost an equilateral triangle with those two bright stars. By iteelf the comet is more like a white blac adistinct star, Extending away from it up to the right is the tail, as yet #isible only as a light smudge. It was plainly discernible last night in Nevada City with ordinary opera glasses, Thie comet is giving the earth a close call, as it is passing within 18,000,000 miles. ’ It is cn its way from unknown space to make a tour around sun and then go back to the infinite dietances whence it came, As the enn is 92,000,000 miles from the earth, it will be seen that the comet in passing withfo 18,000,000 miles of us is comparatively close. Comets are held by the superstitious to be _portents. Thus, in 1881, a comet visible in the northern heavens—one of rare brilliancy for a few nights— appeared late in June. On July 2d following, President. Garfield was shot, And now, no doubt, some superstitious people will assert that there is some connection between the appearance of this new comet and the passing from earth of Pope Leo XIII.
