The’ Times-Herald’ of Chicago offers
prizes amounting to $5,000 to, successful
competitors in a horseless carriage race between Chicago and Milwaukee. The date
of the contest is tobe about the first of
November. This will allow time éndugh
* for the perfection vehicle motors, The
first prize is to be $2,000 and a gold medal,
open to the competition of the world, The
second prize is to be $500, with stipulation
that in the event the first prize is awarded
to a-vehicle of foreign invention, this prize
shall go to the most successful American
competitor, The third prize of $500 and
the fourth prize of $100, are open to all
competitors, ioreign oF American, The
prospectus sets out that the horseless carriages are the sensation of ‘the hour in Germany and France, and already has commanded the attention of the English Parliameat, At the Columbian Exposition there
was only one specimen of that class of vehicle represented aud that a very clumsy
one. So rapid has been the development
since that time that in the race a short
time ago between Paris and Bordeaux, over
a hundred horseless vehicles were entered,
and the successful competitor mide the
round trip of 700 miles between the two
cities at an average rate of speed of sixteen
miles an hour. It appeared that the route
included long stretches of bad road, with
many hills and steep grades. The average
country roads in France and England are
math beiter than they are in this country.
The eighty-five miles between Chicago and
Milwaukee are said to be as fine a roadway
as there is in any part of thecountry. The
‘Vimes-Herald could not have done a better
thing to stimulate the genius of inventive Americans, If a cheap and effective, horseless road carriage is the result it
will be one of the most notable inventions
of the age. There will of course be a number on trial. The test ought to make as
good a record as the best that reeently were
tried in France. (f the one hundred vehicles that were in competition al] of them depended on electricity ‘as a motor. That
plan involves the storage battery and a cons derable additional weight on that account,
The American who invents a horseless vehicle that would come into general. use
would reap a fortune as large as any man
ought to have. These statements are just
now of special interest. ‘‘Already there
are two great concerns in Paris which are
unable to supply the ever-increasing demand for horseless carriages, These coinpanies are the Panhard-Levasser and the
Fils de Pengeot Freres, Ove makes. carriages with. wooden spokes, while the other
prefers a vehicle with steel spokes and
modeled much after the plan of the bicycle.
Toe Pengeot Fila wagon, carrying four
persone, received first prize ia the recent
race Between Paris and Bordeaux,
and has from that fact’.attaineda prestige which bids fair to make them both rich
and famous. Iuaquiet way 4 Chicago inventor has been hard at work inventing a
horseless carriage and he declares hé asks
no odds of any of foreign make. A Racine
factory is miaking a vehicle of the bicycle
style, which possesses some good pvints,
and when the situation is thoroughly canvassed, it will probably. be found that the
United States will not surrender that first
prize without a determined struggle, Amer. __
ican bicycles do not suffer by comparison
with those from across the water and when
Uncle Sam gets on his thinking cap the
horseless carriage problem will be settled
for alltime.” ‘The bicycle is already having a perceptible influence in securing better roads, The horseless carriage would
have still greater influence. These swift
and light vehicles could not be used to any
a ivantage where bad roads were the rule
and good ones the exception. The bieycle
has come into almost universal use in cities
and large ‘towns, aud in suburban places,
Steep grades aré overcome and other obstructions by, a dismount and a traddle
over these places. Buta horseless vehicle
would not admit of any euch alternative,
If ever it is brought. out in a way to become
popular, there would be « revolution in
_yoad making in this country.

.BOONE AND THE INDIANS.
The Old Kentucky Hunter Was a Prisoner .
In Their Hands For Months.
Boone frequently took to the field on
set expeditions against the savages.
Once when hé and a party of other men
were making salt at a lick, they were
surprised and carried off by the Indians. .
The old hunter was a prisoner with them
for some months, but: finally made. hig
escape and came home through the track
less woods as straight as the wild pigeon
‘flies. He was ever on the watch to ward
off the Indian inroads and to follow the
war parties and try to rescue the prisoners.
Once his own danghtes and two other
girls who were with her were carried
off by a band of Indians. Boone collected
some friends and follownd them steadily
for two days and a night. Then they
came to where the Indians had killed a
buffalo calf and were camped. Firing
from a little distance, tney shot two In
dians, and rushing in rescned the girls.
-On another occasion, when Boone had
gone to visit a salt lick with his brother,
the Indians ambushed them and shot the
latter. Boone himself escaped, but the
Indians followed him for three miles by
the aid of a tracking dog, until Boone
turned, shot the dog and then eluded his
pursuers. In company with Simon Kenton and many of the noted -hunters and
wilderness warriors he once and again
took part in perilous expeditions into
thé Indian country. Twice bands of Indians, accompanied by’ French, Tory
and British partisans from D< {roi t, bearing the flag of Great Britain, attacked
Boonesboro. In each case Boone and his
.fellow settlers beat them off with loss.
At the fatal battle:of the Blue Licks,
in which 200 of the best riflemen of
Kentucky were beaten with terrible:
slaughter by a grent force of Indians
fromm the lakes, Beoone commanded the
left wing. Leading his men, rifle fb
hand, he pushed back—andoverthrew
the force against bim. 3ut meanwhile
the Indians destroyed the right. wing
and center and got in the rear, so that
there was nothing for Boone’s men exrept to flee with all speed.—Theodore
Roosevelt in St. Nicholas.
WELLINGTON WAS WARNED.
A Design Which
Affected the Destiny of Europe.
The story goes that Wellington: need
to ride over daily, with one or two of
his staff, from his headquarters at St.
Jean de Luz, and take his stand on the
top of a wooded sand hillock; called
Blanc Pignon, on the left bank of the
Adour, which commands a view of both
banks and the-town itself two miles up
stream. This had been noticed by the
French, who had still command of the
river and the opposite shore, and the
tealons sailor aforesaid, Bourgeois by
name, conceived the plan of entrapping
the great English captain by lying in
ambush for him, with.a few men,
among the undérgrowth on the sand
dune, which happened to. be on neutral .
ground just outside the line of French
pickets,
General Thonvenot very honorably declined to sanction this tricky proceeding,
but, seeing through his glasses from the
clock tower of the cathedral in Bayonne
that it was actually being carried out,
notwithstanding his disapproval, he sent
a mounted orderly, as fast as he could
gallop, down the road on the left bank
of the river (the present site of the Allees Marines): past the French pickets,
to warn Wellington of his danger. The
message was just in time. When within
a short distarice of the ambush, awaiting
him on the narrow little track winding
up the sand dune, he turned his horse
and moved quietly off in another direction.
So says the story, which, entirely believed by the French, is placed on record
by Morel, declared in a footnote to be
correct, and then (1846) within the
memory of living witnesses. We can entirely agree with the author in his succeeding remark, ‘‘Thus, by one of those
strange chances beyond all human explanation, there fell through a design
which might have materially changed
the course” of “events. VeeeMaomillen's
Magazine.
Creduality of Russian Peasantry.
A writer in a French review tells a
curious story serving to show the misery
and credulity of the peasantry in some
districts of Russia, as well as the audatity of the unscrupulous swindlers by
whom they are sometimes fleeced. An
adventurer was recently tried at Saratof
for having induced a number of peasants
to abandon to his keeping all their worldly possessions, with the view of. emigrating under his guidance to—Jupiter.
There they were to find land in abundance, easy to work and marvelously fertile. When the local authorities interyened, it was found that quite a band of
emigrants were preparing to start for
the blessed planetary colony, Weare not
told what defense was made by the prisoner, but it was quite apparent that his
dupes were aware that it was to no terrestrial land of promise that he was to
lead them. He was therefore indicted
and condemned for ‘‘spreading false-reports about Jupiter, '’—Westminster Gawette.
Altitude and Suffrage,
The United States voting precinct with
the highest altitude is that of North

the office door of the usual polling place

inaccessible for from six to nine months
each year on account of snows, generally polls 76 to 80 votes. —St. Louis Bepublic.
