important and interesting exercises at
the end of the axle was twisted off.
The train was going at about fifty miles
an hour. The ties for several rods were
ground to splinters, and the heavy steel
rails were bert into fahtastic shapes.
When the crash came some cars
reared forward, some turned sideways,
some rolled over and others tore into
the ground. Many heavy wheels were
split open by the force of the concussion, and some cumbersome steel
axles were bent double. The wreckage was a sight to behold. Rubbertired buggies, bicycles, eggs, pelts,
crackers, cheese, groceries, canned
goods, etc., were rushed into a: conglomerate mass. When the. hot box
was torn from the gearing it fell into
a ripened grain field by the roadside
and set it afire. The south-bound
overland, which left Point Richmond at
9 o'clock Sunday night, reached the
scene of the wreck at 3 0’clock Monday
morning, and the north-bound passenger, which left Visalia at midnight,
became along ebout the same time.
Workmen were brought on special
trains from all directions, and by daylight 104 men were at work laying
temporary tracks around the wreckage. At8:30 the new.track was ready
for use, and after a delay of five and a
half hours \passenger traffic was resumed, The loss is estimated at $125,000:
