Fd HE following from a woman contributor in the Tulare Register contains so much of truth and is put in such a readable form that we reproduce it, notwithstandits length: . Page upon page is printed, lecture upon lecture delivered, expounding the duties of motherhood. The physical development of the child is ‘reckoned of less importance than character building. At “the mother’s kiiee” we are told the mind of the child should be instilled in the principals of good morals, good manners, good taste, purity. and religion and very lately there has been added to this “mother’s knee” course good citizenship. She must teach her childrén to be patriotic; instill in them love of country, reverence tor the flag and above all, inspire her boys with the sacred privileges of citizenship. } _All this is well and not beyond reason in the demands upon motherhood toward the development of the child. But is there nothing to be learned at father’s knee? With sons the ‘mother’s knee’ period is comparatively short. The boy soon passes on.to another stage of development wherein father’s example becomes a potent factor, often submerging _ the lessons learned at “mother’s knee,” leaving them only a dim and, perhaps, sweet memory—something to think about while paying some penalty of tollowing father’s example; something perhaps to prevent him from losing all faith in human ‘goodness. “She was good” he thinks, “and really did know what was best.” _ A mother may devote the best years of her life teaching the small'sons that tobacco is injurious, that swearing is bad, that honesty is the only true and safe road to happiness and _Success, when too often a sad day comes when the small boy looks steadily into her eyes and says, “Papa does it.” The “I'd rather you wouldn’t” or “You are too young, my son,” goes for nothing against the stronger force of example. . : As every mother’s influence extends beyond-the boundaries of her home so also does every father’s. A boy very naturally chooses a man as his ideal. If not his father, some other man, and if thisman’s conduct —is not—based upon “mother’s knee,” principles rest -assured the boy knows it. . ___The-average American boy is too shrewd to be fooled. A man may pose before society and be admired for what he is not, but the smallunobserved boy knows him and admires him for what he is. The boy knows what kind of a tie he wears, whether his clothes are tailor-made or_otherwise. ~He} knows whether this man smokes cigarettes occasionally himself. The boy may be a rod away boring a hole*in the dirt with his toe while his ideal man is driving that sharp bargain or while he-is piling that cord of wood with the bottom sticks the wrong way. The boy knows what -his man puts under_the buggy seat or into the boat when he goes fishing, And what this man does is a stronger argument fos manliness than any woman’s talk. From what one hears or reads on the subject of the risgeneration one might infer that all a boy needed was a good mother to insure a splendid manhood. There are thousands of good mothers who have taught their boys with the greatest care, striven always to keep the highest ideals be‘fore them, all seemingly to no purpose. The father’s life or the lives of other men based on ideals of an inferior sort influenced him most. There would be less cause for complaint especially of the American boy if in the “knee course” of early instruction the father should appreciate a great deal more his responsibility and be sure that his example reinforced the mother’s teachings.” FRPP Pe RHR HH B® Jealousy and Love. OME philosophers, notably a man named Finck, who wrote about ancient and modern love, have contended that jealousy is a modern emotion and was unknown among ancient people. Finck refers to various improper customs prevalent in patriarchal times and not yet extinct in the world, particularly§ polygamy and polyandry; and from them concludes that men and women, under primitive conditions, had not that desire for exclusiveness in love which is the root of jealousy. The soundness ‘of this conclusion may be questioned. There are jealousies in the harems of the polygamous ‘Turk, and we have scriptural t t t 8 Abraham’s attentions to the bond-woman. -that_a_man-has twe-wives is-not-evidence is jealous of the other. . Genuine love must have a desire for exclusiveness, and the love that is not slightly tinctured with jealousy must be] weak. Two persons never loved each other strongly who did not look askance on Strangers, Husbands have been jealous of their own children and wives of their mothers-inlaw. Jealousy in most cases is ridiculous, but, like many ridiculous things, it is not far from the borders of the sublime. The very dog that loves his master is jealous of him and barks at other dogs whom the master fondles. And, as civilization has not created jealousy, neither will it eradicate that passion, Jealousy is a concomitant of true love. : Surely the fact that —neither-wife +he—other officers of the American.
