A Fine Performance Given at the Theatre
Last Night by the Palmer Company,
Chas. Palmer and his company of players appeared before a Nevada City audience
last night for the first time: and made one
of the finest impressions upon our péople of
any theatrical company that ever tread the
boards of our local play house. The company is a klng-pin organization in every
respect and is undoubtedly one of the best
light comedy troupes on the rodd this season, All expéctations were gratified and
the many favorable comments of the merits
of the company heralded in advance of their
arrival were more than verified. Particular stress may be laid upon the specialties
introduced by the company. They are
of a high-class and refined character and
have met with the indorsement and approbation of the pressand public at all times
and in all places,
The play put on last night, ᠀甀爀 “Boy,”
isarather comical piece, with little plot
and punctuated throughout with fine singing and clever and artistic dancing, and
it must be said that the leading vocalists

An Electro-Magnetic Cannon.
This recent invention is dependent for
its action upon the principle of the foree
of attraction and repulsion as caused by
magnetism. A brass tube, 5 feet long,
246 inches in diameter and 1 inch. bore,
was wrapped with insulated wire along
its entire length, the current flowing
through different sections of the windings in such a: manner as to ¢anse the
bullets to becomé temporary magnets,
which were attracted by the magnétic
lines of force ahead of them and repelled
by those behind them, thus giving the
projectiles an increasing hnpetus as they
pass along the gun. The bullets are
thrown forward in much the same man>
ner as the armature of an electri¢ motor
is turned on its axis. The cannon’ is
light, inexpensive, and its capacity for
throwing projectiles depends on the rapidity of loading the same. It is estimated that a five foot gun, requiring
500 volts and 100 amperes, will throw a
ing velocity of 100 pounds.-—Boston

dramatic parts during the evening, Both
are general favorites with our people and
when each appeared they were greeted with
bursts of applause, which showed they have
not been forgotten since their ‘last visit,
Mr. Hosmer’s role was somewhat out of
his usual line of ‘acting but he portrayed
his part in a manner which demonstrates
that he can depart from the style peculiar
to himself and still retain’ his strength and
ability. Miss Ross depicted the character
of an adventurous woman and did’so as

ever come in contact with and are to be
recommended wherever they go. :

people of those portions suffer
for the lack of water duriny
the day time, when so much
sprinkling is carried on.It is therefore necessary for
the proper protection of. the
town to restrict the hours during which the sprinkling of
Streets may be continued,
From date, until arrange
ments can be made for better
facilities, these hours will be
from. 9 to 10 A.-M. and from
4 to § o'clock p. m,
We hope the people will
accommodate themselves for
the present to these hours.
