son was hung ‘here at ten o’clock this
morning for the murder of Chas. Perry
. whom-he killed .on the first of March,
1896, in the southwestern part of
Josephine. county. Yesterday Nelson
was. taken to the Episcopal Church and
baptized into that faith. He professed
& complete change of heart. To the
rector hé made a fall confession of the
crime, the commission of which he had
previously stubbornly denied. He slept
‘SOundly all night and this morning.

thoroughly relished. He went to his. increase

scaffold was visible from the street and

the closing scene in the murderer’s

Saved by the Militia,
Guascow, Ky., July 2—The militia
here prevented the lynching of the negro, Tol. Stones, on trial for attempted
assault on Miss More, a refined white
teacher in the college here. Threats
were made that the prisoner would be
shot down like a dog in the courtroom.
The town is full of angry people. . Benot liked by those of his own color,
and when the plan of lynching him
was proposed there were a number of
negroes who acquiesced. The calling
out of the-militia by the authorities
was done none too soon, and it is just
possible that despite their presence the
arob may yet attempt to lynch Stones.
The militia company is composed of
determined men, who will not hesitate
to fire on the crowd if -an assault is
made. ~ “ et
Later.—Stones was escorted to the
train at 2:30 o clock this afternoon by
troops with glittering bayonets ahd is
tentiary at Eddysville. After the
train pulled ont one thousand met

Bradbury, wife of the well known young

had been circulated recently regarding
the family relatiotis of the Bradburys.
Beyond a published statement to the
effect that he will nv_longer be responsible forthe debts of his wife, young
Bradbury does not evince any sign of
interest.in the couple, but itis believed
that he has .employed detectives
to trace the runaways if possible. The
presumption is that the runaways will
take the next’ steamer for Honolulu
and thence for Australia.

Pipe Line I Damaged,
One of the air valves on the pipe line
at the Providence mine was broken off
last night by being struck with a rock.
The escaping water caused a decrease
in the pressure af the mill, and the
mill hands began’at once to look for
