Nevapa City DaiLty TRANSCRIPT NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED BE. BROWN, Manager. TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION Gyfem, + > £$6,Per Year . By Carrier, es ~ Delivered toany vart of the city. Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City GATURDAY 2 ooccccc cases cn soe as ee JULY 2, 1904 12 1-2c Per Week To Be Inaugurated March 4, 1905: FOR PRESIDENT, THEODORE ROOSEVELT FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, ~ Charles Warren Fairbanks. NEVADA COUNTY PIONEERS N the first page of the TRANSCRIPT tuday will be seen a group picture of seventy-two Nevada county pioneers, many of whom are still living not withstanding the fact that the largest majority have passed to the other shore. This picture has been reproduced several times at intervals since it was first published by the TRANSCRIPT in the early eighties, and each time our readers have taken renewed pleasure in looking at the faces of the old timers and pondering over happy memories of the past suggested by these once sturdy Argonauts of the West. Time has made many changes, however, and nearly all these pioneers who are still living have almost reached the age of three-score years andten. May their last days be their best days and unsullied happiness and prosperity crown the pathway of declining life until they rejoin their fellow pioneers who have preceded them to the Golden Land of eternal happiness. a a ee ee ee ee A DISPUTED QUESTION — HE California Promotion Committee, that by the way is doing excellent work for the advertising of the re— sources of our entire State, has sent out an article urging all Californians to discontinue the abbreviation of the name of the State, and suggest that “Cal.,” “Calif.,” or “Cali.” stand for haste and that their use does not help to advertise the State. The Wednesday Press of Alameda county takes a different view of the question and says: “Abbreviations of the names of localities that aré known throughout the wide world are strictly permissible. If one sees the letters ‘“‘N. Y.” in writing or print he at once knows that it has reference to the great Empire State that is the gateway at this hemisphere from Europe. And so it is with the abbreviation of the word California, or even to carry it to greater restriction, the two letters ‘“‘S. F.” have a universal meaning and convey as much as if the unnecessary words San Francisco were written out. Inthe more primitive days men signed their names with a single initial. B. Franklin, D. Webster, H. Clay, A. Lincoln are familiar on some of the most imp>rtant State papers of this country, and everybody at a glance knew whose hands controlled the pen. It is necsary where a man or a country is universally known that there should not be a useless expenditure of time for the purpose of identification.” \poctal Dispatches to Transcript JADANESE STILL ADVANCING General Kuropatkin in Personal Command of Slavs Who Still H old a Pass.
