A party of hunters have just returned to givilization after a ‘trip along the Colorado river. One of. them, Capt Hurd, tells of an interesting discovery they made. One mornirg they rose seat ‘daylight to take advantage of a long day in which to make a desired excursion. As they passed’ among the timber on the steep and rocky side of a@ canyon, they suddenly came upon a big dead tree, every limb of which was ,. literally covered with bats of varying sizes. “There were hundreds and thousands hanging to the wood. But as the hunters watched a cisions sight was_revealed, There was a hole in the trunk of the tree, and one after another the bats released their hold on the limbs and disappeared in it. They moved in with great regularity . and speed, but more than an hour was consumed. before all had disappeared. It was evident to the interested watchers that there was not room within the tree trunk for one-tenth of all the bats which had enteréd, so they determined to cut the tree down and. discover the secret. When the tree was felled a eave was found undérnéath, and in this the thousands of bats found refuge by day. A match dropped in the mouth of the cave brought the inmates out in greaf numbers.—Philade'phia Press. COULD NOT PAY HIS FARE. Rothechila Was Once Placed at the Mercy of an Omnibus Driver. Baron Rothschild was once caught in a predicament that many people experience daily, and that is getting into a conveyance of some kind and then not having the money to pay the fare: The driver of the omnibus into which Rothsehild entered, says Harper's Round Table, demanded his fare, and the baron feeling in his pockets, discovered thai he had no change. The driver was very angry. “What did you get in it for if you had no money?" “I am Baron Rothschild,” exclaimed the great capitalist, “and here is my ecard.” The driver scornfully tossed the card away. “Never heard of you before,” said he, What I want is your fare.” The banker was in great haste. “Look here. I've an order for a million,” he said; “give me the change.” Ard he profféred a coupon for that amount. The “driver stared and , the “passengers laughed. Fortunately a friend of the baron entered the ompibus at the moment, and, taking if. the situation; immediate ¥ paid the fare. The driver, morseful, said to the baron: “If you . want ten francs; sir, . don’t mind lend. ing them to you on "my Own account,” erties Nene The Dewfaltiin f vitain. The Washington correspondent of the Chicago Times-Herald relates a laugh-. ible incident in the career of Mr. Tarsney, of Missouri, who was until lately a member of congress from that state, . but was unseated by the house. SUMMER SUITS.. place some years ago, when Mr. Tarsitey was not so well known as he is at present. It was in the midst of a political cam. paign, and Mr. Tarsney, who had gone . to New York state in the service of his . party, was announced to speak in a . country town. The chairman of the . minded to give the gentleman from Missouri a handsome reception. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “we have with us to-night one of the greatest statesmen of the great west, an orator famed throughout. the Mississippi valley, a gentleman whose name is to you. a household word. Permit me to introduce: to you Mr.—Mr.—” Here the flow of his eloquence was checked, and leaning toward the orator of the evening, he whiepered: “What did-you-say your name was?” “Tarsney, of Missouri,” whispered the orator. “Fellow-citizens,” resumed the chairman, “it is my proud pleasure to introduce to you Mr. Larceny, of Missouri.” WRITER AND.-. ACCOUNTANT. Machine. Which “Insoribes. Letters and Adds Figures ni the Same Time. A machine has been invented for typewriting and adding figures at the same time. The invention is described, says the Pittsburgh Dispatch, as being . : intended to quickly and accurately add a column or columns of figures, and at the same time and by the same manipulation of the keys to print these figures upon a sheet of pper or a blankbook in the order ih which they are added, so as to form a proof «sheet, which will verify-the correctness of the addition. The machine, by special adjustment, may be made to print at the figures, and to do this in a vertically descending or vertically ascending or horizontal progression. Addition can be made either to the right or to the is in full sight. @he machine works ¥ writer, and its speed is only limited by the skill of the operator. It subtracts by a reversing arrangement, the regis-. tering disks running one way as readily as the other. Its construction is simple, considering the variety and extent of } work done. It is adapted to printing on passbooks, which it does as readily as upon the ordinary plate and sheet. It can be used to add’without printing or to print-without adding. -If mistakes are made they can beseenatonce. _ . ‘ t j i end of the column’ the sum total of the . ! th the ease of a type.
