EST, IN 1860 BY N. P. BROWN & CO,’ ERR AS AEST ENC IT TS TIE, & COLD CLIMATE. A Candie Finds It Hard Work to Keep Warm in the Arctics, 1 Cold is merely a relative term. The . _. resident of the semi-tropical countries . . shivers when the thermometer falls to 50‘-degrees, while the Laplander and Eskimo think it is comfortable at zero. For real cold, and plenty of it, one + }must go to the polar regions. _ Think ;. of living where the mercury goes down to 36 degrees. below zero-in-the house, . . in spite of the stove. Of course, in such ‘2 case, fur garments are piled on until a man looks like a great bundle of skins. Dr. Moss, of the polar expedition of 1875-76, among. other things, tells of the effect of cold on a wax candle which he burned there. The temperature was 35 degrees below zero, and the doctor must have been considerably discouraged when, looking at his candle, be discovered that the flame had all it could do to keep warm. It was so cold that the fens could not melt all the wax of the candle, but was foreed to cut its way down, leaving a sort of skeleton of the candle standing. There was heat enough, however, to . melt. oddly-shaped holes in the thin walls of wax, and the result was a beautiful lace-like cylinder of white, with a: tongue of yellow flame burning inside .of it and sending out into the darkness many streaks 6f light. “THE LACK OF MEN. ser as ial ae THE “TRANSCRIPT, Published every eveni ; Sundays and Legal Holidays by by . . ANeged Increase of Smoking Among “s Women Who Ride Bicycles. The statement that the sale of cigars and cigarettes is steadily decreasing is not borne out by the government statistics, says the New York Sun. For the ten months of the fiscal year ending April 30, 1896, the cigars manufactured ‘or home consumption only. in this vountry numbered 3,508,200,487, or an ‘nerease of 68,458,754 over the last fiscal year. In cigarettes an even greater in-tease is recorded, the total product for he first ten months for home covsumpof 617,804,480, Consequently 1he state} ment of a decrease, which was attribuied to the bicycle, is false. Sy As & matter of fact, there has been a «reat inerease in. cigarette smoking through the popularity of the bicycle. This, it is stated, is due lnrgely to cigirette. smoking by women, who, very snuny of them, are well equipped with tiny cigarette cases, cigarettes and matehes, A firm niaking high-grade . cigarettes specially adapted to the taste of women than for mep; and the number of special private brands, bearing the name ond address, or crest and motto of the customers, is incréasigog daily.
