William JPowell, a miner of Indiana Ranch, was the first witness exanined. He was sitting on the porch

"May 4th last, when Dailey came along
from Wilder’s gate. Page, who was

Dailey. The two men engaged in convarsation, but did not talk loud enough
for witness to: hear. Presently Page
raised his finger and shook it in tront
of Dailey’s face. Dailey said to Page :
“Hit me or put’ your hand on me and
Pil kill you.” To which Page replied
that he respected Dailey’s broken arm
and preferred to wait until it got well
to settle the difficulty. Daily said:
“Never mind the broken arm; go get
your gun and I'll kill you.” Page then

DAN 7. COLE HOME AGAIN,
Was a Delegate to the Trans-Mississippi
Congress,
Ex-Harbor Commissioner Dan T. Cole
arrived from the East Monday, says
the Call. During his month’s vacation
he visited New. York, Boston, Chicago
and Minneapolis, and says that in ali
of these cities business is reviving, and
that everywhere the prospects for better times are good.
Mr. Cole was a delegate to the Trans_ Mississippi Congress and stopped .off
at Salt Lake to attend it.
“When they introduced ‘politics 1]
thought it was time to leave,” said he.
“When it was decided to hear a speech
from Bryan on free silver I simply told
the convention it could have all the
politics it wantea, but that I was going
home. My trunk was soon packed, I
caught the next train and here I am.
“Ihe circular sent out by the chairman of the convention has the following under a.big heading:
SUBJECTS por Discusston—It is the
desire of the committee to confine discussion to those subjects which are of
common interest to the section of
country represented, and to exclude all
subjects which are local or political.
“Well, I went there to do something
for the common interest of thé section
of the country I represented and when
they rang in a stump speech on free
silver I thought it was time to quit.
One of the gold men from Oregon introduced a resolution asking for a
Speech on the gold side of the case, but
the gold men voted it down.”
Mr. Cole is looking hale and hearty
and says he is feeling particularly well
after his holiday.

General Nelson A. Miles, U. 8. A.,
famed the country over for his success in doing battle with the redskins, was in Chicago recently, and
one of the first men he met was Edward Rosewater, editor of the Omaha Bee. The meeting was significant, for it recalled an incident of
the early seventies and how the Ne.

Intimately connected with the Indian uprisings were Frank Grouard
and Captain Jack Crawford, the latter being better known as the poet
scout. Both did good service as
scouts with the Seventh cavalry,
Captain Crawford acted at this
time also as a correspondent for The
Bee, then a small daily, struggling
for existence. During Custer’s last
stand Crawford was with Colune)
Benteen, who commanded a part of
Custer’s command at Slim Buttes.
and Grouard was with Colonel Reno, who commanded another detachment of Custer’s forces. After the
Custer massacre Reno dispatched
Grouard to Deadwood, 8. D., the
nearest telegraph station, to notify
the war department of ‘the terrible
affair. At about the same time Captain Crawford concluded to ride into
Deadwood and dispatch to The Bee
