THE TRANSCRIPT. . "BROWN 6 & dese ‘w.F, Bown, eB, OALEING, pee 21,,. 1899, —_—— — WOMAN SUFFRAGE NOTES. Sa, ‘ee (BY BE. MB.) Woman Suffrage and Prize-Fightirg. The fact that the Legislature of Colorado passed a bill permitting prizefights on the payment of $1,000 license, . has been Wéed asa text to prove that woman Suffrage did not. prevent this evil. ‘There were only three woman memibere of this Legislature, and‘all of . them voted against the bill. Women constitute a minority in the State, but the powerfal Woman’s Civic Federation in Denver and the Woman’s Ciub of 1,200 members have: passed resolutions of protest against.this new law., a also have petitioned the Governor jude its ‘repeal in the new list of aa to be considerea if-a special session of the Legislature is called. Archbishop of Canterbury For Woman’s Suffrage. The following is the petition whicb the Archbishop of Canterbury recently has signed, his name being one of a very distinguished list: “Your petitioners hold that the recoguition of the full rights of women as capable citizens is essential to the establishment of social justice and to the wise and efticient government ot the country. Wherefore your petitioners humbly pray that your bonorable House will ; ass a measure securing to women the right of voting for members. of Parliament on the same terms on which that right is or may be exercised by men.” The Archbishop of Ou«::terbury is the highest dignitary of tne Church of Eogland. He is the Primate of all England, has a prominent place in the House of Lords, and by immemorial ‘usage he presides at the coronation of kings and queens, and places the crown on the head of the sovereign: Many con servative Episcopal clergymen _ will shudder at the action of the Archbishop in signing a woman suffrage petition. The Episcopal, as’ well as the Methodist and Catholic Bishops, are divided on this question, just as they. used to be on that of human slavery. Mrs, Abbott is Prosecuting Attorney. The Attorney-General of Michigan has instituted proceedings to remove Mrs. Abbott from the office of Prosecuting Attorney of Ogema county, to which she was elected last November. She is a qualified lawyer and «.3 regularly elected, but as the stutu‘es are silent on the question of the elig:tility of a woman to hold this office, the A‘ tornéy-General has decided that she shall be deposed. She will take her case to the Supreme Court, but if this body shows itself no more liberal in spirit than when it. gave its. decision against municipal suffrage for. women, which had been grauted by the Legislature, Mrs. Abbott will not be prosecuting attorney of Ogema county. The Denver Post has an item to the effect that the “he-shirt waist has been introduced in Kentucky, and witb the exception of a pint pocket in the breast resembles those worn by the sweet young men of Philadelphia.” But a blue-grass paper declares that this allegation carries its own refutation. No native Kentuckian would be satisfied with a pocket holding less than a quart. re AGO er — “Look at poor Mrs. Jones dragging that heavy hose around sprinkling their yard.” “That’s all right. Listen to Mr. Jones. He’s putting’ the baby to sleep.” Many a Lover eee Has turned with disgust from an otherwise lovable girl with an offensive breath.
