On Thursday Mrs. Nellie F.: Bond
gave a private picnic at Ragon’s Grove
in honor of her guest# and a few intimate friends. It was a very pleasant

The Tax Collectors of Nevada and Sterra
Counties Tax 66,000.
The sheep men of the lower counties
have for many years heen driving their
stock: over our roads to the mountains
‘on the line between Bierra aud Nevada
counties. “They have hitherto escaped
taxation by representing to the collector of Sierra county when be appeared
that.they were in Nevada couuty, and
when the Nevada county collector appeared that they were in Sierra county. .
County Treasurer Juckeson deputized
Henry’ Fowler to-act in conjunction
with the collectbr of Sierra county
and they found 65,000 which they
taxed and the sheepmen will now have
to pay.

Several Villages Were Engulfed,
Yorouama, July 21. Mount Azuma,
near Bandaisan, which was the scene of
a volcano disaster in 1888, broke into
an eruption Tuesday, July 17th.
Two bundred persons were killed or
injared. Several Villages were engulfed
by the stream of lava from Mount
Azuma, and great damage was done in
ud jacent districts.
