Cook, who lived near Loomis, Placer county, went with his wife and , four children three weeks ago-on a hunting trip to the Coast’Range mountains, As they were returning yesterday through Capay Valley Cook saw a flock of turkeys and killing one threw it into his-buggy. ~ ‘The woman owning the turkeys sent a constable named Morris mounted on & bicycle after the party and he soon came up to them. Cook wanted to pay him for the fowl, but he refused to accept thé money, saying it-was bis duty to make the arrest. Cook sprang from bis vehicle and taking the officer’s weapon away beat him over the head with it. The constable, after a struggle got the weapon back and shot the Placer county man through the head, killing him: The constable went to Beryessa and gave himself up. . Patmyra, Mo., July 28—On Friday. night Daniel Rose found J. W. Morris in his daughter's bedroom and admin. isteted a severe beating to him. Today Morris met the father on the street and shot him dead. : Rove Ont of a Gof, Neweouraes, N. Y., July. 28.—As Hezekial Simons, an aged miser, lifted’ the lid of a coffin in his house last hight a masked man sat up and covered Simmons with a revolver. Simmons had the reputation of being one of the most miserly as-well as one of the richest men in the neighborhood. It was also known that he kept considerable of his wealth in his house. ‘The story was that he had thousands of dollars hidden away in an old cotfim; The people. in the town have often wondered why some bold robbers did not make an attempt to steal from the old miser. Last night the robbery was successfally accomplished. Whien the old wretch recovered from his fright, after the depariure of the masked man, he found that he had been robbed of $300. None of the neighbors sympathize with him in bis loss. Lively Blaze at San Jose, San Josr, July 23—At an early hour. this morning seven dwelling houses belonging to Antone Davorich, and’ situated'on Sunol and Haynes streets, were burned. The buildings, which were insured for $5,000, were valued at $15,000, and the furniture at $5,000. Davorich had a narrow escape from® being burned ‘to death: It is thought the fire was incendiary. Another Gone, Frorence, Ala., July'23.—Jim Speaks, the negra about whom there was 80 much rioting here for three days, was killed at midnight, but his body has not been found. Dronken Wassill, Wixesparre, Pa, July 23—Peter Wassill was hanged here yesterday for the murder in January, 1896, of Joseph Kupersavage. At the tim ¢ of the murder Wassill was ‘in a beastly state of intoxication. _Kupersavage, the murdered man, gave him no provocation, and the murder was cold blooded. The trial was one of the mest sensational in the annals of the State. According to Baney, Mrs. Hinshaw was killed by John Whitney and Guy Van Tassel of this city who were robbing the place. Vun Tassel ‘fired the fatal shot to frighten Mrs. Hinshaw. The attorneys for Hinshaw are holding back Some of the evidenve. Baney says the two mien told him of the’ killing while riding with him. In an old shanty within the shadow of the United States jail, lying on a pile of straw, and covered: with rags, was found Mrs. John Hauer, the widow of a once well-known German resident of thie city, almost corner lay two scantily-clothed corpses. There are no grounds to prosecute a charge for kidnapping. This morning a Chinaman who claims to be the woman’s father arrived from Marysville. He wanted Son Lee given into his charge and said he would tuke her back to Marysville. The officers refused to comply with his request. He is one of the parties who think they own the woman, At 4 o'clock. this afternoon Ab On and Son Lee were united in marriage . by Justice Holbrook, theceremony being performed in the Sheriff's office. in the presence\ of about a dozen _persons. The couple were both well dressed and seemed to understand perfectly the full import 6f the marriage ceremony. When Justice informed them that they were now man bride he was quick to comply and gave her a loving embrace. The little bride was almost overjoyed at the thoughts of being united to the man she loved, and threw her arms affectionately around him. Both manifested great happiness over the turn in their affairs and were glad to know that the fact of their being egally married would prevent the wo’ ’s former persecutors from interfering with either of them. Those who witnessed the wedding and the scenes attending it firmly believe that it is a case of true love. After the ceremony the bride and .groom received the congratulations of all present. = The charge of disturbing the peace comes up this evening. ARE ROW MAN AND WIFE, Sierra County's Popular Clerk Passes Away Rather Snddenly, suddenly at Downieville last night. and Mrs. N. Meany’of this city, and was known to many of our citizens. He was a bright, capable young man, aud was well liked by his numerous sequaintances. He was a member of the grocery firm of Eschbacher, Meroux & Co., and was also interested in the Downieville Mee. senger. Mr. Meroux belonged to Nevada Commandery, Knights. Templar, and to the Masonic lodges at Downieville, also to the Native Sons. He was born at Downieville, was 32 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children. His parents, and other relatives reside at Downieville, one sister lives at Sierra City and one brother at San Francisco. Mrs: Meany, his mother-in-law, went ~’ to Downieville yesterday to visit her daughter, arriving thereat 4 p.m. Mr. Meroux was taken sick yesterday morning at 8 o'clock and died at 10 o’clock last night, death resulting from appendicitis and heart failure.
