Odd Wedding Customs;
In Switzerland the bride on her wed.
ding day will permit no one, not even
her. parents, to kiss ber upon the lips.
In,.many ,of the provinces the. cook
pours hot water over the threshold after the bridal couple have gone in order
to keep it warm-for ahother bride.
There isan old superstition in Ger.
many against May marriages.
A favorite wedding day in Scotland
fu: Dec. 81, so that the young couple
can leave their old life with the old
year and begin. their married life with
the new one; surely a pretty idea.
‘The Italians permit no wedding gifts
that’ are. sharp or pointed, from which
practice emanates our superstition that
the gift of a knife severs friendship.
One of the most beautiful of all marriage customs is that of the bride, immediately after the ceremony, flinging
her bouquet among her maiden friends.
She who catches ‘it 1s supposed to be
the next bride.

He Was Rather “Close.”
An English clergyman of the eighteenth century, the Rev. Mr. Jones of
Blewbury, with a nest egg of £200 and
a stipend amounting to, £50 per annum,
left at death the sum of £10,000. He
had been rector of his parisf for forty
years, and during all that time only
one person had been known to sit at
his festal table. No fire was ever lighted in his house, nor was & servant kept.
In winter he would. visit: his parishioners to keep himself from perishing of
cold rather than light a fire at the rectory.—Cassell’s Journal,

Her Opinion of Asparagus.
It seems that asparagus is not grown
at Rio de Janeiro when a certain Amerlean gentleman, -whohad lived several
years: in. the Brazilian capital, went
with his wife: and: 8-year-old daughter
to visit friends living near. Buenos

the climate is. better adapted to the
fruits and vegetables of the temperate
regions.
At the first dinner after their arrival

and, with ‘a. choking voice and quivering lip, whispered to her mother: “Mamma, it is not nice. It’s raw at one end
and rotten at the other.”
Wigs In Conrts.
Before the reign of Charles 11. judges
wore either a velvet cap, a three cor.

twig came over from France, and the
grave aspect which it gave to an other:
wise commonplace face was appreciated at once by judges and doctors,
who immediately adopted it. The forter have stuck to if ever since.
Barristers, seeing how good was the
effect of a wig, attempted to copy their
seniors’ example, but the judges bad
no idea of their copyright being in
fringed and made things so unpleasant
for their imitators that it was nearly
half a‘century later before wigs were
universally adopted in law courts,—
