NeEvapa City DatLy TRANSCRIPT BROWN & CALKINS, Proprrerors, aient SS Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION e ‘*e $6 Per Year . NE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS in the administration of gubernatorial affairs of any State whichis sure to find favor and endorsement ‘with appreciative citizens and taxpayers is to have a chief executive at the head of affairs who, besides pursuing a wise, judicious and progressive policy of government, will be economical and give the people the lowest possible tax "rate. Just-as sure as the way to a hungry man’s heart is through his stomach, so the route to popularity and favor with the taxpayer is through his pocket-book, and the administration that “hits it light” is the one that wins. Such a satisfactory and wise administration has been that of Goyernor Henry T. Gage, as the following table. compiled from the official record will prove, and for this reason he will: be renominated and elected for a second term by the voters of Here are the figures: California. It will be seen by these figures that while other administrations. have had-their-ups. and downs in taxation, that of Governor Gage shows 4 steady reduction from the time he took charge until now. Ifthe people of California desire a continuance df low taxation, they cannot escape the conclusion that it is imperatively necessary ‘to renominate and re-elect Governor Gage. . If his tax rate of 40 cents and 2 mills is a genuine feat of economy, and can be sustained during subsequent years, no other man in the State can do the work except him. If this rate is the result of economies which are to be met by subsequent Legislatures with deficiency bills, the best possible way to find that out is to renominate and re-elect him. In any event, the taxpayers and toiling masses of California must repudiate the work of this remarkable pledge-keeper, and disregard their own interests, or they must unanimously favor his retention in office. From the present outlook Governor Gage will easily win the Republican nomination for governor, The taxpayers have no fault to find with his administration, and a new man in the executive’s chair would be an experiment. Governor Gage has been tried and not been found wanting. ‘The prob. lems which have confronted him during his term of office have been met with a firmness and broad statesmanship that commends him as an able and safe custodian of the great interests, not only of the State, but the whole Pacific Coast. The Governor’s enemies day by the very methods they are. using to encompass his defeat. Americans like fair play and insist npon it, and the onslaughts of the Call, the Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times and the little organs have instead of weakening the governor, made him friends in every community. — -(Year. .Governor. . 1899—Gage-: SW — Lewin’.. eile Verein.
