If they have amassed great fortunes at the cost of the consuming masses they have expended them for the uplifting of . And yet what the rich and powerful have done is only a stfall part of what the cousecrated many are doing unnoticed ‘day by day. They are lending a hand when it is needed and in giving directions to aspiration when it would otherwise be painfully picking its laborious and discouraged way. The three most potent organizations for making things better than they are, are the churches, the schools and the libraries. The functions of these are all extending and not narrowing and largely through the influences of outside agencies which get in behind them and push them on. In many eastern cities the churches are becoming much more than places of worship and organizations for collecting and disbursing charity. They are intellectual and industrial It has been found, in the light of experience, that they are capable of being made powerful levers for the uplifting of the general mass, not only religiously but socially ee The public schools, too, are coming to be more than mere institutions of learning for the youthof the land. They are being made centers of intellectual community life and the school houses are being profitably used as assembly halls for parents as well as children, in the evening as well as durFinally, the free public libraries are being made of more i consequence than for the mere giving in aud taking out of They are doing lyceum work and successfully con-. jot ducting forums for general discussion of public questions. Company’ A namber Mining Notes. About tee’ Sone ego a rich strike was made at the Champion mines, in this district, and the ore, which is well filled with sulphurets, gives splendid returns, To meke it still better, the new find leads off from the 1600foot level into néw ground. From.all indications the new body will become extensive a8 work progregses, ‘and Superintendent Abadie feels elated as to the results. The opening of another ore chute on the 700-foot level remeen FOOT» for which work has been in progress for some time, also gives great encouragement to the Ohampion Oompany. These discoveries mean much to our people, who will be greatly pleased to learn of the bright fatpre that is sarely ahead for: the old standby—the Obampion mide. It is not necessary to go on at length as to the great worth the chain of properties controlled by thie enterprising company is to, Nevada City. The fact of their unfailing eupport for years is @ matter that comes . “right home” to the entire community, and their successfal operation means continued prosperity for our people. It is currently reported that negotiations are well under way that will lead to the re-opening of the Belle fontaine mine, Willow Valley district, very soon. The property hae been idle for some time, but parties who are qualified to judge in the matter, say the mine~would become a good’ dividend payer if it was properly opened up. A-five-stampmill is-to-be-erected_at}the Huron Mining Oompany’s property, near Omega, in a short time. Superintendent W. H. Bray has just completed his arrangements for the construction of a well-equipped mill. The mine is opened up in good shape, and Mr. Bray has every configence in ita future. Good reports ébatpiae to come ‘from the Zeibright mine at Bear Valley. The ledge is twenty feet in width, and but little depth has been reached as yet. The future success of this enterprise is now assured, and as 8000 a8 practicable suitable machinery to bandle ore properly will be erected. Then the working force will also be creased. An order was lsoned yesterday by Judge Nilon restraining W. M. Burekhalter from disposing of” or transferring any commuuitg property now in his possession. Mrs. Burokhalter is sueing for-divorecd and $100 per montb alimony, henee the order. The parties are from Truckee. Goarly, who left. this city about a month ago for Alaska, where he is to superint@md the opening and development of a rich mining claim near Council Oity for a French syndicate of San Francisco, met with quite a thrilling adventure and a close call of being drowned before arriving at his destination, the scow containing hie party of miners, with suppliee and baggage, being swamped by the dan@erous eddies and rapids of Fish river. Mr. Goarly, however, considers the experience as nothing more than an ordinary incident in the life of a mining man in anewcountry. He writes as follows to the Transoript concerning ow “‘Counom Orty, July 1, 1908. ‘We arrived at Oouncil City last Monday (June 29th) after a pleasant trip to Golinas Bay, thence up Fish River to White Mountains by river steamer, and thence by scow towed by horses to this place. The.same day we left by scow with our Pn de Asoc at ers and their baggage—and had an easy trip until we reached some rapids about 800 yards above town, where we were’ swamped. Our scow shipped some water over her boom, then veered around starboard side on t> the rapids, and commenced sinking. Almost. instantly the whole of us were washed overboard with all the supplies which would float. We then struck out for the shore to save our lives, which we all did in good shape. ‘As goon as I saw our scow ship water then I realized it was ‘all off with us, and commenced throwing off my big overcoat, but did not succeed. Iwas glad afterwards that I failed, as the coat served as a sort of a parachute or buoy and helped me to float shorewards until I strack bottom. “The good people of Council Oityput out with boats and scows.and succeeded in saving all of our baggsge and gupplies, which were rapidly floating down the river. “If the boatman had succceded in cutting the tow line in time, we might have escaped, but he could not get his knife out soon enough. Since then we employed a boatman who has landed all of our supplies at the mouvh of Reitcher creek, near where we intend oparating. ‘ “Sach is life in the far North, “The weather is lovely—-a very acceptable requisite after taking a cold bath.” alton last Tuesday Mr. Lahue of this city bad several ribs broken and was burt interhally.
