A Prisoner's Efforts to Get Out of. the
Calaboose.
Late last night there was ’a lively
fisticuff between two men in a saloon
on lower Commercial street. When
Officer Kilroy made his appearance and
attempted to arrest the belligerents he
was struck by Charles Laughlin, one of
the parties, who was very obstinate and
resisted with all his might. Officer
Levee soon came to Kilroy’s assistance
and Laughlin was taken to the city
About 2 o’clock Levee went to the
jail to see how the prisoner was getting
‘slong and foand him trying to. break
ont. He-had pryed the heavy wooden
threshold loose and removed two
urses of brick the fall width of the
door. When Taughlin saw Levee he
ran into ope of the cells. The officer
went inside and locked the prisoner up
in a small cell, Laughlin had smashed
the stove and damaged the stovepipe,
and had also set fire to a mattress,
This morning three. charges were preferred against him. viz: disturbing the
peace, resisting an officer, and attempting to break jail. His trialgon the first
charge was set for5 o'clock this after.
