brought the sad. news, which spread rapidly. Great excitement prevailed arid
universal regret was expressed at the
killing of . Sheriff Douglass. Many
persons hurried out to the scene of the
. tragedy on foot, on horseback and in
buggies. Amongthose who went out
was Robert Latta, the liveryman, who
was held up about two weeks ago. on
the San Juan road. He idedtified the
stranger as being the man who stopped his buggy.

parties who have of late been committing highway robberies at different.
man who has been furnished food at
several houses in this vicinity. Saturday he got something-to eat at Mrs.
Millhone’s, in this city, and yesterday
had dinner at Mrs. Storey’s on Or
chard street. He is the man the officers were so close upon Saturday afternoon near Cement Hill. Friday or Saturay he called at the winery on American Hill and asked for something to
eat. He made two or three calls at
houses on Wet Hill, and usually asked
the folks to put him upa lunch, after
he had already eaten; giving as an excuse for this extra request that he had
alongtrip before kim. It would appear from this that he hada partner
somewhere and was procuring food for
him. He is evidently’ the same man
who: held. up Wm. Berry, the miner,
Saturday night.
The stranger has been seen at Wet
Hill and that vicinity several times of
late. A day or+two before the hold-ups
on the San Juan road he was at Richards’ brick yard on Cement Hill, about
two miles fromi town and about the
same distance from the scene of the:
robbery. Nothing more was seen of
him until last Saturday, when he was
noticed passing through the diggings
above mentioned by a man who worked
for a while in the brick yard and was
there at the time the stranger was
hanging around. The robbery on the
San Juan road so soon afterwards and
the description of the robber fitting
the stranger so closely, caused him to
remember distinctly how the man
looked, and when he saw him again
and the fellow turned from the trail
and went off through the brush, he
was more suspicious than ever, and
hastened to town to inform the officers
concerning the man.
Saturday afternoon some time the
same man appeared again at the brick
yard, but did not stop. He passed
along the. trail-and was seen by the
men in the yard. An hour or so later
the Sheriff and his informant came, to
the brick yard, having trailed the suspect that far. They followed him a
short distance froin there and then
lost: track of him.
The discovery that led to Sheriff
Douglass locating the whereabouts. of
the criminals was made by Miss Della
Wells. ‘She was out gathering pods
and grasses Saturday and saw tracks
in the neighborhood of the spring.
She went home and notified her father,
brought to.town he has been identified
by numerous persons who have seen
him here within the past two or three
weeks. eas ;
_t-has also transpired that the rifle
found with him was stolen from Grant
Dart, who lives near Pleasant Valley,
& short time ago. A shotgun was
same day.
Dr. Tickell, who made ‘the post
mortem examination, says the men had
been dead about 15 hours.
M. L, Marsh recognized the dead robber as C. Meyers, who went to work at
their sawmill on the 25th of-lastMay.

unfavorable comments made by some
persons since the recent robberies
happened worried him considerably
and doubtless led him to make the attempt to capture the “lone highwayman” single-handed, to show that it
was not a want of bravery or determination on his part that the criminal

“Dave” Doiiglass well and firmly beliéves that he possessed much more
than the average amount of bravery.
