iB TRANS . CRIPT. ~~~ Moore's story is Was. JULY 28, 1898. a faesirammaee by BROWN & CALKINS. —N,. P, BROWN, UL. 6. OALKINS, —_—_ — TAB MOORES GBT MIXED. ‘tt Looks. as Though t! the Old Wan Stole’ a Horse. When Clarence Moore was. brought . _ before Justice Holbrook yesterday to) anawer a charge of stéuling a two year old stallion from Grant Wilson ot El-) dorado county he told a very plausible and ingenions story that tended to Greate an impression among the officers . ‘that they had the wrong man. Subsecanes investigation however led to the conclusion that the prisoner is about _ as bunglesome a liar as ever tried to get out of a scrape.. 1 f 1 . . . that he drove Mecaih from Nevada with his wife and eleven year old son by the way of Qar-. son, Reno, Webber Lake, Bowman Dan, . this city and Grass Valley to Wheat. land, intending to pick bops; on reaching Wheatland he found; “he ‘was abead of time and came! back this way looking for some other) ‘kind of work. His eleven year old boy told Deputy Sheriff Pascoe “hat they got it in the State of Nevada a year and . a half ago. Mrs. Moore's story of the . trip told after her husband's arrest at: their camp on Robber Hill south of the . Glenbrook House, does not in any respect bear out what the prisoner says. She deviared to Sheriff Getchell that they came here by Placerville and Sacramento, and that the colt followed them from mento. The little woman is broken up badly over her husband's arrest, and was in a hysterical condition last evening. John Leik, the brother-in-law of the man from whom the animal was stolen a week ago yesterday, had a hard time trailing the Moores. trail through Sacramento and Lincoln, bat he lost it at Wheatland. He found . several parties in the lower country . whom Moore told his destination was} Sierra Valley. Leik thereupon hastened . — te this city and the machinery of ‘the . ‘Bheriff’s otfice was set to work with the . result that the fugitive was quickly . ’ caught, MOORE TURNED LOOSE. On the advice of acting District Attorney Riley Moore bas been given his liberty, as it is not deemed best to put this county to the expense of prosecating him. If the owner of the horse . wants to put him through he must doa} go in the Eldorado county courts, but . ‘ ga the horse has been surrendered and . will soon be in his possession again he . will probably let the matter drop. 2 Ome eBoth Cases Dismissed. ‘Phe row that Watchman ©. Very few people are aware of the fact that ina watch they are always provided with a compass, with which when: the sun is shining the cardinal points can be determined. All one has to do is to point the hour hand to the sun, and~ south is exactly half way between the hour and the figure 12 on the watch. This may seem strange to the average reader, but it is easily explained. While the sun is passing over 180 degrees (east or west) the hour hand of the watch passes over 360 degrees (from 6 o'clock to 6 o’clock). Therefore the angular movement of the sun in one hour corresponds to the angular movement of thé hour hand in half an hour; hence, if we paint the hour band toward the sun the line from the point midway between the hour hand and 12 o’clock to the pivot. of the hands will point to the south. e How's This?
