They are about to enter the University of California. “. tendance on conventions and the manThe Republican “Gives Some Timely Suggestions, The State Republican Central OCommittee has promulgated:the following: California should be especially loyal to the Republican party—the party of ‘Our State Government, both of our Senators and all our members of the House of Representatives, should be in political harmony with the ‘National; Administration. In issuing the call for the next State Convention we appeal to the good sense and patriotism of the ‘people of this} great State to exhibit such wisdom and’ activity in the coming campaign, including the holding of preliminary caucuses, voting at primary élections, atagement of the campaign to the closing of the polls on election day, as will certainly give this desired’ result. 1. A State convention of the Hepa ab. lican party of the State of California ia ‘hereby called to meet in the city of Sacramento on the 28d day of August, 1898, at the hour of 1 o’clock p. m., to nominate candidates for State offices to.be voted for at the general election to be held in the State of California on the 8th day of November, 1898, to select a new State Central Committee and to transact such other business.as may be brought before said convention. 2, The appointment of delegates to said Convention shall be: One dele-/ gate at. large; one delegate for each 200 votes cast for D. BE. McKinley, who received the highest number of. votes for Republican Presidential Elector in 1896, and one additional delegate for each fraction of 100 votes, or over, provided that any county in which less than 200 votes were cast: shall be entitled to one delegate. 8. Delegates chosen ‘to said convention shall also be delegates to the district conventions in the respective districts from which they were selected, for themomination of Railroad Com. A. J. Registration will close on August 15th, after which you can’t get your name on the big book for love or . money. Persons changing their voting: pre-. cinct must have the transfer noted on the Great Register. Certificates of party nominations. ‘must be filed in the County Clerk’s of-. fice between September 15th and October 8th. Certificates of independent candi-! at least ten days’ notice of tbe primary dates must be filed between September 15:h and October 19th. October 19th is the last day in which ‘to file the nomination’ of a candidate to fill a vacancy on a ticket. October 24th is the last. day in which a candidate can withdraw from a ticket. The County Clerk is directed by. law to post and publish an election proclamation on October 29th, containing the names of the various. candidates. The mailing of sample ballots to every qualified elector in the county must commence on October 20th. In counties having three or more Assembly districts, primary elec‘tions must be held, and must be held ‘by ‘Assembly districts. 5. At last night’s meeting of the Native Daughters of Laurel Parlor there was a geographical missing letter contest in which Mrs. L. S. Calkins won the first. prize and Mrs. Phil Byrne the second. Refreshments were served. Last night the City Trustees awarded Geo. E. Tarner a contract for 200 feet of new Imperial fire hose at. 80 cents afoot. The hose damagedin the Pine street fire will be turned over to the residents of upper Pine and East Broad streets to be cared for and used by them. At the town of Auburn the other evening as the water was turned on at ‘the electric light worke, a cow, which was at the upper end of the pipe was qT the pipe about 75 feet and lodged at a point where the pipe was only 20 inches in diameter. Asa result the town was without light all vight. Idle Miners Go Prospecting. The temporary suspension of work in some of the Comstock mines has resuited in the idle employes making daily prospecting trips to nearby mining districts, says Wednesday’s Virginia. Oity Chronicle. A prospecting. party of three left Tuesday night for Siegel district, about 36 miles northeast of Virginia City. The ore in that district is principally galena carrying a small percentage of gold. The veins are too small, however, to admit of the ore being handled profitably on -account of the supply of water in the district, being insufficient to operate a milling and concentrating plant on the each Assembly district where primaries are held, and the polls at each primary election must be kept open at least twelve hours. . ) The chairman and secretary of the several county committees shall forward to the secretary of the State Central Committee a list of the delegates elected at least three days before the day fixed for the meeting of the State . The face of the lower tunnel is now down the canyon 8000 feet from the mouth of the big shaft. This ancient goldbearing channel has the same pitch or inclination that the surface canyon has. It averages about 500 feet deeper than ‘this channel for the full 3000 feet. Forty-five men are employed regularly.
