Effect of the Wilson Law.
Under the Wilson law we are buying
six times the amount of English. wools
that we were under the McKinley law.
The result of this is, that our 1860
woolen mills are turning out less than .
half the goods they were previous to
the enactment of the present law, with
the inevitable effect that 700 of our
mills were compelled to close, depriving 45,000 operatives of employment.
There is andther significant fact growing out of the free wool provision of
the present law, which is: this, that,
though the output of our Woolen factories is only about two-fifths of what
it was when the McKinley bill was in
force, ourmill men are purchasing
three times as much foreign wool as
they were under the former law, So
that, while three-fifths of the woolen
goods worn by the American people
are of a foreign make, one-half*of the
remaining two-fifths made in home
mills is composed of foreign wool, says
anexchange.
