ACCIDENT TO MRS. O’BRIEN.
She Was Thrown From a Buggy 0
Friday Night.
Marysville Appeal: Mrs. James O’Brien
and daughter and Mrs. Lyons left this city
on Friday night in a surrey for Smartsville,
Driving along the high grade opposite James
Bradley’s and at this side of Shelton’s the
buggy tipped.over the grade and the ladies
were thrown out. Mrs. O’Brien received
some injuries which are thought to be rather
serious and the driver, a man named M eCoy;
received some slight injuries. The top of
the vehicle was broken. Some ladies who
had been at the pavilion arrived soon after
the accident and rendered every assistance
to Mrs. O’Brien. It was not until a late
hour Friday night that the accident was
given to an Appeal reporter and it was impossible to ascertain how serious Mrs.
O’Brien’s injuries were. The lady had just
returned from San Francisco, where she has
been on the sick list,
Dangerously, il.
Smartsville, is dangerously ill at San Francisco, where she has been for some time.
Mr. Lane will leave for the Bay tonight,
having been called there by her sickness.

The Real Demon of the Marsh
. Is not a spook, but a reality, It is neither
a “bogie” nor a “‘kelpie,” nor any other of
those spirits which the credulous have supposed to haunt the banks of rivers and
streams after dusk. Its name is malaria,
and though invisible, it is very terrible and
tenacious when it siezes you. Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters drives it away, nor will it
with the great medicinal defensive agent.
The miasmatic mists of early morning, the
vapors exhaled at eventide may be safely
breathed by those protected by the Bitters.
In the tropics where-every form of malaria
disease threatens the sojourner, and is particularly virulent when developed, the Bitters
is the reliance of the inhabitant. For dyspepsia, liver complaint, lack of vigor, appetite and sleep ; for rheumatism and nervousness the Bitters are a sure and safe remedy.

San Francisco, July 28, ‘94,
Eprror Transcript: ‘The strike was
the absorbing topic of conversation here up
to the present week. Since then the daily
papers have mostly dropped the question,
and no longer make it the subject of sensational headlines. As soon as they quit
the general public let go. It has been as
much a & newspaper strike as ALR. U. It
hag been the means of corralling numerous
nickels for the newspapers and that is sufficient cause for their action. A committee
of citizens waited upon &@ newspaper proprietor to remonstrate with him for the
course of the newspaper and in the -interview he assured the committee that he was
as well aware of the disadvantages’ the
strike was causing as they, and that he discountenanced it as much as any citizen, but
it would be the ruination of the paper’s circulation to pursue any other course than
that already pursued. And yet the people
look upon the press as the guardian of their
liberty and the promoters of public opinion.
Anything for a sensation that will sell papers is the motto of the daily press. You
get the conservative opinion of the people
in such times only in the weeklies,
San Francisco has not yet recovered
from the effects of the iron-molders’ strike.
The State will be years in overcoming the
backset it has received during the past two
months. Every line of business has been
paralyzed. Every occupation has been affected . injuriously, Every ‘house-holder,
tax-payer and every citizen has been a loser,
and all for nothing. ‘The strikers are as
heavy losers as business men and capitalists
They have gained nothing. They admit
having had no grievance to complain of of
their own. They were only in sympathy
with some cabinet-makers and mechanics
in a suburb of Chicago who were not railroad men at all. ‘The have lost their salaries, their positions and the friendship of a
company, that is known all over the United
States as the most ccnsiderate and liberal’
employer of men known. It has been said
that any, railroad employe in the East has
been anxious for years to leave his position
there if a place could be obtained on the
Southern Pacific system. The climate, the
pay and -the general good treatment were
80 superior to anything in the East was the
cause of the willingness of railroad men to
And yet those employes, at the back of
an unknown man in Chicago, tied up everything on this coast out of “sympathy” for
the men employed in the town of Pullman.
In their acts they were again sympathized
with by every agitator and Populist politician and others in California, who have
given means to feed high-priced lawyers. to
defend men accused of the most heinous
crimes known under the law.
No one (this I know) had anything but
the kindliest feelings for the railroad workers till they attempted to ruin the industries of the State by unlawful proceediiigs.
No one has anything but pity for them
now because they are subjects of pity even
their position is due to lack of discretion
and good judgment. Of course this pity
does not extend to the criminals among
them,

P. Rev. J.T. Murrish, who conducted
the services at the hall, delivered a very
interesting sermon and paid a high tribute
to the memory of the deceased. The singing was under the charge of John Werry

large assemblage of people present indicated
the high esteem in which the deceased was
