Mra. Samuel Downey, : a sister of Henry . A SPICY CORRESPONDENCE, From One Who Understands Affairs in San Francisco. San Francisco, July 28, ‘94, Eprror Transcript: ‘The strike was the absorbing topic of conversation here up to the present week. Since then the daily papers have mostly dropped the question, and no longer make it the subject of sensational headlines. As soon as they quit the general public let go. It has been as much a & newspaper strike as ALR. U. It hag been the means of corralling numerous nickels for the newspapers and that is sufficient cause for their action. A committee of citizens waited upon &@ newspaper proprietor to remonstrate with him for the course of the newspaper and in the -interview he assured the committee that he was as well aware of the disadvantages’ the strike was causing as they, and that he discountenanced it as much as any citizen, but it would be the ruination of the paper’s circulation to pursue any other course than that already pursued. And yet the people look upon the press as the guardian of their liberty and the promoters of public opinion. Anything for a sensation that will sell papers is the motto of the daily press. You get the conservative opinion of the people in such times only in the weeklies, San Francisco has not yet recovered from the effects of the iron-molders’ strike. The State will be years in overcoming the backset it has received during the past two months. Every line of business has been paralyzed. Every occupation has been affected . injuriously, Every ‘house-holder, tax-payer and every citizen has been a loser, and all for nothing. ‘The strikers are as heavy losers as business men and capitalists They have gained nothing. They admit having had no grievance to complain of of their own. They were only in sympathy with some cabinet-makers and mechanics in a suburb of Chicago who were not railroad men at all. ‘The have lost their salaries, their positions and the friendship of a company, that is known all over the United States as the most ccnsiderate and liberal’ employer of men known. It has been said that any, railroad employe in the East has been anxious for years to leave his position there if a place could be obtained on the Southern Pacific system. The climate, the pay and -the general good treatment were 80 superior to anything in the East was the cause of the willingness of railroad men to And yet those employes, at the back of an unknown man in Chicago, tied up everything on this coast out of “sympathy” for the men employed in the town of Pullman. In their acts they were again sympathized with by every agitator and Populist politician and others in California, who have given means to feed high-priced lawyers. to defend men accused of the most heinous crimes known under the law. No one (this I know) had anything but the kindliest feelings for the railroad workers till they attempted to ruin the industries of the State by unlawful proceediiigs. No one has anything but pity for them now because they are subjects of pity even their position is due to lack of discretion and good judgment. Of course this pity does not extend to the criminals among them, POLTTICAL, “The political pot is beginning to simmer,” The different parties are looking to their ‘‘fences.” The most active = now aré thé Democrats, Chris. Buckley is purifying the saty i in the city, and when he gets that in working order will ‘take a view of the country. When the convention meets at the Baldwin it is expected there will be a lively time. The Poprlists are less active now than‘; they have been for a year and a half.
