In about two.weeks it will be circus day, and the Great Syndicate Shows will give two exhibitions in Colfax—afternoon and evéning. The Salt Lake Tribune cumments in complimentary terms on the Syndicate shows: ‘‘Never since the city of Salt Lake was founded has theie been a visiting circus that so fuNy fulfilled its preliminary ‘advertising and its every promise as has the new great Syndicate Shows and Paris Hippodrome {t promised much, and the people looked forward to seeing. a wonderful show—one that was different from the usual and regular thing—and they were: not disappointed, It is by far the best circus that has ever It is big and extensive, yet so compact in every arrangement that every one in attendance can easily See each and every act on the program, which is extremely interesting throughout its eutire length, Few people leave the teut until the last act is tiuished, a fact which highly emphasizes the unanimous stamp of approval which the public everywhere have put upon this exhibition,” #@eA Successful Teacher. Every scholar of Mrs, Parsons’ evinced the fact that their voices had received the culture. of fine training, an equal evidence also that they could with confidence in themselves appear before the most critical of audiences without showing the least nervousness or timidity, There were fourteea numbers to the program heard a light rattling noise that he supposed . -and all were rendered ina becoming , manwas caused by seeds iu the pods of some wild bushes near him and which were being swayed by the breeze. The time is drawing near when the various fairs will be held throughout the State. Of course every community is deeply interested in the State Fair and the directors say the forty-second annual State Fair commencing at Sacramento on the }2nd of September and continuing until the 14th—two weeks. The Oroville Register says: Butte is witnessing a mining excitement greater. than ever known there since. the days when the argonauts overran the country, There is more individual prospecting. More men hunting for mines of their own than we ever saw before in the county, Each canyon, gulch and ravine finds some miner searching for gold, Go where you will, from Magalia to the summit, from Bidwell Bar to Granite Basin, from Enterprise to Franklin Hill, there is found the miner with his prospecting outfit hunting diligently for gold. More gold will be taken trom our mines this year than during any preceding year since 1860, ‘The effect of renewed gold mining is being felt ih all lines of business and is daily adding tu the volume of trade. a —_— 7 Protests Ignored. All of the protests of the State Miners Association against filings on land, including the celebrated list No, 54, have been dismissed by the Commissioner of the General Land Office. List No, 54 covers over 200,000 acres in Placer, El Dorado, Sacrainento, Nevada and Sierra counties to which the Central Pacific Railroad Company has, made claim to as agricultural lands, ‘The Association claims that. these lands are within a. well-defined mineral belt and are therefore reserved for public entry under the United States. The reputation of a business firm is regarded by the publi¢ as an index to the place and to the proprietors, If patrons receive fair and impartial treatment they are very apt to speak well of the house to others, We don’t know of a business place in the county that in this respect enjoys a better reputation than does the firm of Luetje & Brand of this city, dealers in watches, clock, jewelry, silverware, optical goods, ete. They carry a splendid stock -of goods, sell at reasonable prices, and any article that is bought of them is honestly guaranteed to be just as represented, 2 Suspension Bridge. Trustee’ Rich is having the suspension bridge overhauled and inspected very thoroughly. The woodwork is being examined to see if any of the timbers need renewing, and ull luose nuts are being tightened on the iron rods, Such repairs: as are found necessary and can be made now will be attended to. It will be difficult to determine whether the wire strands of which the cables are composed have become oxydized to such an extent as to render the bridge unsafe for heavy loads until new cables are provided, veneer wee Knew What He Wanted. A stranger with a big market: basket on his arm arrived in town yesterday from the outskirts, where he left three or four others of a party that is on-. the way to the mountains to spend a month or two with friends who are pasturing. stock on their summer ranges, The man with the basket had never been in town before—that is in this town—and he walked’ about for some time looking at the-signs, Finally he found the place he was looking for and went in. It was Gaylord’s grocery store. He had heard of the tine goods kept there, and after getting the basket well filled went on his way rejoicing, A Lucky Streak, James Power, familiarly known as “Parnell,”” wears diamonds now-a-days.
