One of our government chaprasis. wat, particularly devoted to ber and invari ably shared his meal of fruit or flom takes with his dunib friend Up a par ‘icularly hot day the chaprasi, foamy} surprise, placed his tiny child of. ¢ months at the elephaut’s feet. warniny her charge and was to be cared for til: hisreturu 1 myself was ap cyewitnes: #f her wonderful sagacity -Largeba ugna trees and fig trees grew around, and, to my surprise, the elephant broke off one of the former's spreading leaves, held it like.a fau in her trunk and fron: time to time gracefally waved it over the slumbering child, whether. to tem per the heat of the atmosphere or t keep off. flies, Lam onable to say — The gentle way in which she moved her feet astounded ine . I sent, for a white’ toai and some cranges, and, calling her by game (she was never chained), tried in . vain to tempt her to my side on the low veranda. Nothing would induce her i Iéave ‘her charge The warm air and monotonous wave of the swinging fap overpowered me with drowsiness, t& which 1 yielded, and. after a sleep. ot some duration, 1 was awakened by quiet, subdued snorts “beside mie Tc my surprise I found that the chaprasi had just returned to his offspring, and the elephant stood near the veranda be side me, patiently waiting and. gently asking for the tempting duinties ec bravely withstood for cver two hours Claret Not French, ‘It is curious, by the way, that the word ‘claret’ as applicable to red wine ispuknown in France, having indeed no. terser equivalent than the generic vin de bordeaux, and its origin isa by no means certain. It has heen supposed to be derived from the word clair, but the obvious objection is that it is anything but transparent, an adjective which would be much more fitly ¥ 20 ciated witb sauterne or champagnc Here it niay bs incidentally remarke:. that .in England ‘grave’ is always as. sumed to be white wine, and even Littre’s Dictionary gives ‘Grave, a white wine from the ehvirons of Grave, in the Bordeaux country.’ This, like the well known definition of ‘crab,’ is a curioué combination of blunders. In the first mniers crus of claret—viz, the Haut Brion-—is.a ‘grave.’ Secondly, there is no such village as Grave in the Gironde. Grave (more often written graves) is a special sort of sandy gravel, and the vineyards which ‘produce the wine known by that name extend along the left bank of the Garonne from just below Bordeaux to something like 20 . miles southtward.’’ Skeat derives ‘‘claret’’ from ‘‘clear,’’ the original meaning being clarified wine, in old French claret, . clairet. The word 18 obsolete in France, although, strangely enough, it. is: stil) a in this. country.—-Notes and Quetie “Wilkes and Liberty.” ~+Wilkes boldly offered bimself as « candidate for the City, and on his rejection for the county of Middlesex. The scenes of. that election beggar description and are tov well known to need it. One incident. is.too amusing to escape repetition. The Austrian embassador, the Graf von Seilern, mest solemn, and haughty of the representatives of a solemn court, was dragged from his carriage by the mob and ‘*45’’ chalked on the soles of his boots. His constantly reiterated demands for reparation, which it was impossible to-satisfy, only made him the more ridiculous. ‘‘ Wilkes and Liberty’? was the one topic of the day in letters and conversation. His bead was even adopted as a sign tor public houses, auti he Mimself told the story of the old lady who said, ‘“‘There heswings, everywhere but where he ought to be.’’—Cornhill Magazine. Making It Easy. Qld John S.—— was a rural postman in a west country district and in 8 teur dentist. On his rounds one day he met a certain farmer about to start for a six mile ride to town for the purpose of getting an aching tooth drawn. Ov seeing old Juhn, however, the farmer, distracted with pain, determined to test the old man’s skill as a tooth puller. A pair of. somewhat rusty pliers was pro duced, and after a few tugs the tooth was held Ps for the farmer to see, whe exolai y; ali, you've drawn the wrong, tooth! That isa sound one!’ _ ‘*] know that, maister,’’ said John, “but now I can get at the other bandi ar.’’—Pearson’s Weekly. —_ Many of the fruits and vegetables now eaten in England were almost unknown to our forefathers.
