The cage’ of the People versus Abel Sandow came on for trial this moraing in the Superior Court, the jury having been obtained yesterday evening efter the. TRansonipr went to press Dr. John T. Jones was called to the stand when court convened, and the follcwing facts were brought out by bis examination on tbe part of the prosecution: There were corralled upon the bank of a certain ditch running to Grass Valley from twentyfive to fifty hogs of all sizes. That the smaller pen was open in four places and all the hogs had access to : the diteh—there being a wallowing place of about five feet. The Doctor stated that the hogs were in a filthy condition, having been fed on the heads and hides of anfmals. On Cross-examination it was brought out that a fence has been built along the line of the ditch’ and the hog-wallow filled up since the arrest of Sandow, That the hogs op and previous to June 19th had access to the ditch and could easily wallow or cross the ditch in several places. That about a year ago, after the persistent efforts of Dr. Jones, Sandow moved tbe pen from tbe county road. Sandow also agreed to move it to a place where it would not ioterfere with the pablic. The pen in its original position was the cause of many complaints on’ account of its filthy condition, Dr. McTaggart testified that the circumstances as they bad existed would pollate the water, and that he hed counted forty-seven hogs in the epclosare. > The case ia still in progress. ’Tis Easy to Feel Good, Countless thoussnds bave found a blessing to the body i Life Pills, whteh vely cure Con*tipation, Bick Headache, Dizziness, Jeundicn, Maleris, Fever and Ague and all Liver and Stomach troables. They should be blind-folded in passing over some of the sidewalks and Aged Lady injured. Mrs. L, Emmons of Coyote street, met with a painful accident this afternoon, She was going down the back ateps at her home, when she slipped and fell, striking on her right shoulder, and breaking the bone. Dr. Muller reduced the fracture. Mrs. Emmons igs quite an aged lady, which will cause the break to be severe, lated before that time. VA 8@ooe — “Prays” as It Preys, — Very strange 1 the insect known as the “praying mantis.” Of this insect M. J. H. Fabre, a distin. guished French naturalist, made a thorough study. According to him, “tte long, pale green wings, like veils, its head upraised to heaven, its arms folded and crossed on its give it a false resemblance to a nun in ecstatic devotion.” A ferocious creature it 1s, ever bent on carnage, the workshops of various burrowing hymenoptera. being its favorite haunts, since there it is almost certain to find prey. Supervisors W. H. Martin, Chris J. Miller and E. O. Grissel went out to the bospital this afternoon, to examine the real and personal property at that) place, which is owned by Dr. A. 0, . Hiokson. They will confer with Dr. i Hinskon asto its value, with a view to “Posted on same bush near the bur parchasing the same. rows,” says Mr. Fabre in bis account Oe of the insect, “it waits patiently until = : it sees some other insect, probably a Professional Palmist. sphex, returning home. By a sudden rustle of its half open wings it terrifies the approaching insect; which hesitates for a moment, and then as suddenly as ‘a spring the toothed forearm folda back on an arm also toothed, and the insect is grasped between the blades of the double saw in the same manner as the Jaws of a wolf trap close on an unfortunate wolf at the instant when it is seizing the bait. Then, without unclosing the deadly machine, the mantis slowly eats its victim.” In Provence this cruel insect tg known as “prego Dieou,” which means “pray to God.”~ Lady Celeste, a professional palmist, who cores highly recommended, is loeated at the New Union Hotel in this city. The Deaf Mute’s Story. “The most pathetic story I ever heard,” said Senator Hoar once, “was told by Professor Gallaudet. The professor had a favorite pupil, a little deaf mute boy, exceptionally bright. Mr. Gallaudet asked him if he knew the story of George ‘Washington and the cherry tree. le “With his nimble fingers the little fellow said he did, and then he proceeded to repeat it. The noiseless geg. ficulations continued until the boy had informed the professor of the elder Washington’s discovery of the mutilated tree-and of his quest for the mutt lator,
“*When George’s father asked bim who hacked his favorite cherry tree,’ signaled the voiceless child, ‘George put his hatcbet.in bis left hand’— ; “‘Stgp,’ Interrupted the professor. {Where did you get your authority for saying be took the hatchet in hig left hand?’“‘Why,’ . responded, the: boy, ‘be needed his right hand to tell bis father that be cut the tree.’” ; 4 Miss Hegarty of Moore’s Flat is here on a visit. At best the case is bad enough without ing-up against a fire plug.in front of Popp’e brewery, breaking it off. The water shot high in the air and flooded the street. The damage was soon repaired. Capt. Frank 8S. Richards, a well known citizen of Grass Valley, whe is subject to fainting spells, fell unconscious on the street last evening, and fora time it was thought he was serfously ill. He was taken to his home, where he recovered consciousness, and 1s much improved today. Serious Floods. . Dattas, Texas, July 29—The heavy rains and floods in Texas were re-‘ . newed to-day, the downpour extending from San Antonio to ‘fexarkana, The eged by washoute and loss’of bridges that traffic has been suspended for the time being. Inventing ‘as a Profession. Necessity is the mother of invention today, as always. The idea that fortultous inventions have formed a prominent part in the world’s industrial and material development has induced some to attempt the invention of use “ful articles without any’ previous experience or preparation. They have trusted to blind chance and have failed. Accidental discoveries cannot be taken in the literal sense, for very few indeed have’ ever beén the product of an untrained and unobserving mind. A mechanic who-has spent half a life. time in one department of human en , deavor may see the great need of a sim. ple invention to save time or labor in , his work. Year by year his mind dwells . at intervals upon the subject, and one day an idea flashes upon his mind or a simple accident suggests the way of inventing what is needed. Such an acct. dental invention ig really the resuk of years of study and observation, and it is thus that many of the simple inven. tions have come into existence.—Gun. ton’s Magazine, Met His Match. Some years ago a steamer . touched at Colombo to coal, and a Moorman went aboard and asked Sir William Gregory to buy a catseye for 5,000 rupees. It was worth 10,000 rupees, but the distressed Moorman’s father was in jail, and he wanted to buy him out. Gregory listened to-the old story and then offered the’ wily dealer a rupee for the gem. The man went off ‘seemingly offended, .but presently returned and offered the gem for 4,000 rupees. “No; a rupee,” repeated the Irishman, As the four hours passed the Moorman came back at regular in. tervals, with a lower offer each time— 8,000, 2,000, 1,000; then 500, 250, 100, and so on-till finally, as the steamer was about to start, he handed over the catneye and took Gregory's rupee! Vor once in a way thé Moorman dealer lies being added to it. The truth and the whole truth will come to the surface lu due tine, and in the meantime new stories should be largely discounted. The olficers have the matter well in hand and will’ not give their case away until the examination takes place. ee spesee ne Hop Pickers Wan ted At the Durst Hop ‘Yards, at Wheatland Yuba Co., Calif:* Picking begins between August 15th and 20th.
