FOLLY’S FESTIVAL,
All Fogis’ Day—Its Origin and its
License. a]
Today ushers in the second siictsth
of the beautiful Spring, when, in
many climes, the trees put forth
their verdure and the buds and
the blossom open and expand:
With.the . Romans. April was: the
second month of the'year ;. and: it
ofiginally “consisted of twenty-nine
days, but Julius Cesar added the
30th day to it. It was called Neroneus, in honor of Nero, the Roman despot; but that title was
soon exchanged for a more poetic
one, the étymology of which is detived from the Latin verb apserire,
to open, for the reason already explained. The first of April is,
however, specially famous as being the first day inthe year consecrated to practical joking.
The origin of the custom, like
that of Saint Valentine’sDay, }™
may be traced back to a pagan or
heathen source, and asAhe -latter
is supposed to have originated in
the Lupercalia, a festival observed
‘in honor of Pan and Juno, by the
ald Romatis, so the former is believed to have sprung from an ancient festival observed among the
’ Hindoos on the 31st of March, and
by them termed Huli. On the

A Crazy Preacher.
A colored local preacher at
Grass Valley named Chamberlain
‘waved a'pair of red drawers at the
Narrow Guage railroad train Tuesday and when the cars ouet . in
response to his signal he handed
to one of the parties on board a
letter and asked that it be delivered to a man who was dying.
Tuesday night he attended the
performance of “the “Georgia”
raantzele, wid at an early part of
the proceedings jumped up from
his seat and loudly charged that
the men on the stage were’ the
murderers of Abraham-Lincoln.
Constable Townsend ejected the
noisy fellow from the building.

‘Constable Townsend brought
two more prisoners to the’ county
jail yesterday, from Grass Valley.
One of them gives the name of
James Collins and is a middle
aged man. He asked fora drink
at a’saloon, and being: fefused preceeded to break”some window
glasses. He was arrested for malicious mischief, convicted, and
sentenced to thirty days.
George McGovern, aged fifteen
and claiming to have been born at
Des Moines, Iowa, broke a stove
in M. B. B. Potter’s schoolroom.
He pleaded guilty ‘and got fifteen
days.
Both of these worthies are

where no fire was ever used, and
thence communicated with the
house. Theentire loss was over

in the grotesque antics observed, .
the great aim of the Hindoo devotees is to make fools of each and
every one oftheirfriends. Unlike
their white brethren, however,
their efforts are confined to the
stereotyped joke of sending their
victims with. messages either to
imaginary individuals or: persenages away from home. Other
antiquarians’ have ascribed the
saturnalia to a Christian origin,
deriving it. from.the.-sending to
and fro f our Savior between Herod, Pilot and Caiaphas, as represented i in the old miracle plays.
There seems “to be an'element of
probability i in this, as the customary freak; and the one which first
occurs to the joker’s mind, is to
send bis victim on bootless and
fruitless errands. Others, again,
derive it from the old ‘‘Feast of
the Ass,’’ which is celebrated by
the Catholic Church on Twelfth
Day. The discrepancy is explained by the sanggestion that the 24th
of March being in one sense New
octave. However the custom
maay have been: derived, it is an
undoubted fact that it prevails
day it may--be: celebrated. ~How‘ever, the day of celebration is
coincident in , nearly all the
countries‘ where it is observed.
in France the fooled man is called
“*poisson d’avril,’’? meaning a silly
fish, easily caught. In Scotland
they are called “‘gowks,”’ (cuck00s), and the word is employed to
express fools in general. The
April-fool custom is there called
“‘hunting .the .gowk.’? In Scotland, the period of joking is limited, from sunrisé until noon, and
at that time’ it is supposed to
cease, but this limitation is hardly recognized by the majority’ of
the wags elsewhere, who continue
their , pranks, till Phoebus has
smiled’ farewell to Day.

running down through Rough and

This will, make the. cost: to. the

We now produce for the benefit of those who are observers of Snowflake’s Pictorial, a sketch drawn by ‘‘our special artist,” showing
what Sacramento will look like on wash nay after the Chinese have

about this drawing, but there is none about PURE OLD SNOWFLAKE.
It is all that is represented for medicinal purposes and family uses.
