the crowd of strikers started toward him. He drew his revolver and held the crowd back tor half a block, and then
they closed in on him. He attempted to shoot them but the

Ohe Strike Is Felt.
SrookTon, July 30.—The general tieup on the San Francisco water front is
Paisinig havoc with the business of the
river transportation companies plying
between San Francisco and Stockton.
Ia fact, the shipping business is nearly
paralyzed both ways. Boats are still
able to deliver freight to the wharves
in San Francisco, and to vessels whose
crews handle the goods. Coaling is
done at Pittsburg, so long as the supply holds out they are all right on that
score. The strike means a big loss of
business to the boat lines. Business
bas falien off greatly since the strike,
and the general tie-up means a further
decrease in business. It is also a big
loss to the farmers who have shipped
fruit to San Francisco. The plums and
pears on the wharf are atill in gcod
condition, but thousands of boxes ‘of
peaches have been thrown into the bay.
The farmer not only looses the fruit,
‘but has to pay the freight.

Queer Case.
Amamepa, July 30—A peculiar case
came up in Justice Morris’ court today when Miss Wilhelmina Berthelson, who was arrested Saturday evening on complaint of E. Mudget on a
charge of disturbing his peace, was
placed on trial. Mudget lives next
door to Miss Berthelson and claimed
that-when passing her place she had
spat at him on several occasions. Beforethe Justice the woman with tears
in her eyes admitted her guilt. She
said that everyone was trying to persecate her and by spitting at them
was the only way she had of getting
for men generally, and when in the
mood spats at every man she meets on
the street. W. B. Storey, Hugh Gallagher, James Munro, Dr. Sander and
many others now take the other side
ofthe street. The Judge suspended
sentence.
