SEAR IR TL TE I TTT LET . CN ETE EI
NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 8, 1894.

, Established Sept.6, 1860, by N. P. Brown &Co.
A BLAMED SIGHT WORSE, ~~
A bachelor, old and cranky,
Was sitting alone in his room.
His toes with gout were aching,
And his face waso’erspread with ichiden,
No little one,’ shouts disturbed him,
From noises.the house was
In fact, fron: the attic to cellar
Was quiet as quiet could be.
No medical aid was lacking.
The servants answered his ring,
Respectfully heard his orders
And supplied him with everything.
But still there was something wanting,
Something he couldn’t command—
The kindly words of eompassion,
The touch of a gentle hand.
And he said as his brow grew darkor,
And he rang for the hireling nurse,
“Well, marriage may be a failure,
But this is a blamed sight worse!”
—Boston Courier.
Couldn’t Fool Him,
' Charles Johnson, a negro, though of
Swedish nomenclature, had been arrest-.
ed for highway robbery out on Independence avenue. A toy pistol, which
had served him in ‘‘making a bloff,’’
and a handful of small coin were taker
from him. He was then ushered before
the captain for the usual catechism.
‘‘Let’s see, what were you in for the
last time, Charley?’’
‘Never done bean heah befo’, boss. ’’
“Oh, come, now, Charley; you’ vo been:
here a dozen times before. ’’
. “‘May de good Lawd ’nilate me, boss,
I’ze-tellin yuh de troof!’’
‘*Well, take him and lock him up.”’
‘Hol on der, cap’n, ain’t yoh gwine
ter let me hab my money???
‘‘Well, I guess not,’ said the captain, winking at the lieutenant. ‘‘This
is my rakeoff. Do you suppose I can stay
here for nothing?’’
“But yah’ let me hab it in. de
mawnin, won’t yuh?’’
“No, eit.”
“‘Not aftah the jedge gits t’ rough. wid
me?’’
**No. ”
“Say, yuh can’t fool mé dat a-way,
boss. I’ze bean heah befo”!”?
Then the old darky was _ taken down
stairs, wondering what everybody was
laughing about. —Kansas City Times.

Boiled Fish Sandwiches,
You may find it hard to believe that
sandwiches made from boiled fish are
good, but if when you have a bit of
boiled “halibut left from dinner you
muke-a-few for luncheon or tea you will}
find them very good. The fish should of
course have the flavor that comes from
boiling it in salted water with a bouquet of vegetables—say a slice of onion,a stalk of celery or a sprig of parsley’
and half a dozen peppercorns. Break up
the fish with a fork; then take a wooden
spoon and rub it as fine as possible.
Make it into a seasoned paste by adding
a fourth of a pint of sweet cream, a teaspoonful of salt, a saltspoonful of white
pepper or paprika, and ‘at the very last
and gradually a table&poonful of lemon
Juice. This amount of seasoning is for
1‘4 pounds of fish. Cut your bread very
thin, spread the slices with a little butter and then with the fish. Lay between
the slices before putting the two together a small, tender lettuce leaf.—New
York Post.
__A Use For Half Burned Carbons,
There is already a demand for the un~aséd and hatf~ burned carbons from the
arc lights. Some one has diseovered that
carbon is a cure for consumption, and it
is a well known fact that men who work
in carbon factories are singularly
healthy. Just how the fragments of carbon are broken up and the particles inhaled does not appear, but people collect
them a good deal and profess to derive
benefit from their use. It has been
claimed for years that a smoky atmosphere is a good one for a consumptive
patient, although this has been denied
by doctors again and again. The carbon
theory may account for what some people believe to be nonsense and others an
infallible theory. — St. Louis GlobeDemocrat.
Absentminded.
Professor Dusenberry of Columbia
college is so completely absorbed in ‘his
profession that he is becoming more and
more absentminded every day. He remarked to one of the students:
‘Something very stupid happened to
me the other morning. I believe I am
becoming a little absentminded. ’’
‘*What is it?’’
‘*You see, I wanted to take my wife
out in a buggy and give her some fresh
air, and when I came to think over it
I remembered that I never had a wife.’’
—Texas Siftings.
. What Did She Mean?
Dickie—So you've taken up the physical culture fad? I hear you are exercising on a row ing machine and indulging
in long walks in the park. What does
it all inean?
Daisy—Well, you see, it develops—but
Wait until you see me down at the seashore a couple of months hence. —Boston
Courier. .

A Visitor Who Was Terribly Scared Dering
# Call at the White House.
Colonel Clark E. Carr of Galesburg,
who Was minis#:r to Denmark under the
Harrison administration, was in Washington oné* ‘day when Lincoln was president,
“I’m going to the White House to
pee Abe, ’’ said Owen Lovejoy to Carr as
they.met in front of the treasury buildjng. Carr went with him. They were
thown.into the president’s working
room, and soon after Lincoln came in.
He wore a long garment which might
j have been out from a bathroom pattern
j or the cover of a prairie schooner. . His
-hair was more frouzeled than usual,
‘and the carpet slippers were worn down
and without heels. The condition and
appearance of the presidential hosiery were such as would have made
Jerry Simpson._ envious, provided the
stories they told on Jerry were true,
which they ever were. The president
gave his callers an Illinois greeting
and then shoved up one of the sleeves
of his curious garment and pointed out
to his visitors the inflamed condition of
his arm.
**You knew I had the smallpox, ’’ said
Lincoln in a cold blooded manner. Lovejoy said yes and proceeded to talk about
other matters, while Carr’s few hairs
had. inclinations to stand up, and he
moved about in his chair as if it contained dynamite. The visit over, the
caller passed oat. Oncé in the air, Clark
asked Lovejoy:
‘Did you know the president had the
smallpox when we weiit there?’’
“‘Certainly,’’ was the answer.
“You d——d scoundrel!’’ shriekcd
Carr. ‘‘Why didn’t you say so?’
“T’ve had it,’’ replied Lovejoy,. ‘fand
[ supposed you had.’’
“Well, I never had it!’’ rox sod Ca:
“But if I do have it now-I want} ou os
give me a certificate that I catigh t the
disease from Abe Lincoln. That will be
something. ’’
But Lovejoy had no occasion to do £0,
as Lincoln had the varioloid onlv.-—0 Mee

George Eagye, driver of the Washington

of thé stage, and when about half way
across caught sight of the approaching .vehicle. Stopping short he turned. partly

Worn Out in Harness.
In the harness of every day businesy work
men and women wear out prematurely. For
some of us it is not easy, for others, again,
it is impossible to get out et harness, 1t is
the inflexible yoke, the strongly forged unbreakable shackle of imperative servitude
needful to ourselves and those most dear to
us. The weight of it often bows many of us
into the grave before our time, but it is un
doubtedly true that there is a means of rendering the burthen less onerous, and of
mnitigating the ailments that unremitting toil
especially of a sedentary kind—has a
tendency to produce,
in counting houses, mill operatives, bookkeepers, type writers and others testify to
the reviving, restorative effects of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, and its power of ’renewing physical and mental energy when
overtasked and on the wane, Dyspepsia,
failing vigor, rheumatic, bowel and kidney
complaints yield to this beneficent medicine,
which is-a preventive of malaria and counteracts the eflects of exposure in inclement
weather.
