Good Sermon.
In the unavoidable absence of Bishop
M. ©. Harris, the Literary Commi'tee
of the Fourth of July exercises, seeured the services of Rev. E. McOlish,
President of the University of the Pacific, who acted as chaplaio of the
day. On Satarday evening he preached
@ Germon very appropriate to the oacasion. ‘Without dealing dircotly with
our national history be called attention to our dett to the great past,
showing that our civilization is a
harvest gathered from the geuverations
that preceded us, His text was taken
from the IV chapter, 38 verse, of the
Gospel of Jobn: “Other men have
labored and ye have entered into their
labore.” He said in substance that
our civilization might be divided into
five factors, viz.: our literature. our
art, our science, our institutions, and
our religion, And upon each of these
other men had wrought for thonsands
of years and the product of these
workmen in different times were for
us to enjoy and transmit. He showed
that time tested all work and in the
long testa only the usefal and the
good were permitted to live. The fit
survives. So that it comes to pass that
we have the fruit and cream of all the
ages, This is our heritage. Into this
our forefathers entered and added
their work and transmitted it to us,
and let us eend it down to our posterity with worthy additions by our
bands.
