Published Evenings Daily Except Sundays.and Legal Holidays. SUBSCRIPTION TERMs—Fifteen Cents a Week, £ixty Cents a Month; Six Dollarsa Year When Paid in Advance fer a Full Year. LocAL REapine Notices—Ten Cents a Line for First Insertion, Five Cents a Line Each Subsequent Time, One Dollar a Line a Month. Rates For Other Advertising Made Kno yn on Application TO A Warning Wave of the Hand. Four boys sat in a row on the tail ot ' g big four horse truck, with their legs dangling off in the usual way. The truck was going down Broadway. To avoid something ahead the driver had turned from the west side of the roadway along which he had been moving up into the down track of the cable road. There it was still slow going for him, and a cable car that was coming. along behind closed up pretty close. As the car neared the truck the gripman motioned to the four boys. They all looked at the gripman intently, but at. first theydidn’t understand at all. The gripman motioned again, and this time the boy on the left.as you looked forward from the car understood. He shifted back on the truck and drew his feet up so that they no longer projected. Then, one after another, in quick succession, the three other pairs of legs went up. They a!l understood it now. In the days of the horse cars the horses were a sort of buffer between the car and the truck. Sometimes they put their noses over the boys’ shoulders, sometimes they swung off to one side or the other, but they gave a margin of time in which to scramble up, and, often a margin in ‘ space in which to stop thecar. But the cable car, with its natural habit of keeping well closed up and with nothing to serve as a buffer, is more likely to come in contact with a truck ahead, especially if the’truck should be halted unexpectedly or forced backward, and any pair of legs that should be caught between the end of a truck and the rigid projecting frame of a cable car would ‘be pretty sure to be broken. Hence the wave of the gripman’s hand.—New York San. Cheerfulness, Whoever said, ‘‘Laugh and thé world langhs with you; weep and you weep alone,’’ was indeed wise, for no truer sentiment was ever written. There is nothing so certain to make you disliked as to tell your troubles to friends. _ Prosperity means friendship. You are welcome everywhere. The world laughs at your witty sayings and makes merry with you. There comes a time when you are downhearted and fortnne ceases to smile om you, and you look for sympathy from the dear friends who have shared your prosperity; but, alas! you look in vain, and there are some who kindly vote you a bore. People prefer ,@musement, and the sight of a forlorn countenance is not pleasant. The best thing, when you can force yourself to it, is cheerfulness. It isa great tonic. It is light and air to our moral nature. To be without it is to be without something that answers to the mind as clothes and shelter to the body. — Minneapolis Housekeeper. eS A Somnambulistic Fisherman, A_ Pittsburger, who is a fisherman, told me a strange story about a giidé who'attends him on his excursions on Lake Erie. The old guide lives at Put in-Bay, and every night when at home he was accustomed to put out a night line for a catch of fish. One summer it ‘was a regular occurrence for a long period for him to get up and find the fish removed from his hooks and placed in.a basket in his cabin. He was at a loss to account for these strange proceedings, knowing of no person so kind as to save him the labor. One morning some of his friends happened to be near his place very early, when they found the old fisherman out in his boat getting the catch of the “night from his lines. He apparently paid no attention to the salutations of his friends, but proceeded with his work. After he had completed the round of his lines he rowed slowly back to the landing, making fast his boat and removing the basket of fish from it. As he came toward his friends with the basket upon his shoulder they noticed a strange expression on his face. He passed them by without noticing their presence, when one of the party ran after him and caught his arm. This seemed to bring the old fisherman out of his strange state, and he looked around as if awakening from a dream. He could not explain why he was there and concluded he had been getting up every morning in his sleep and performing his work without knowing it. Thus the strange incident was explained. —Pittstoh. > HILOH'S $1.00 Bottle. im, red we Bold by and will on Back Ch use SHILOH'S BELLADONNA PLASTER LOH’S/QCATARRA ) you ?
