The tower on the north end of the defunct Suspension bridge across Deer Creek which was being rezed to the ground today by the steel structure gang, did not fall as calcalated, but instead a portion of it dropped onthe porch in front of the residence of the Nolan sisters on Pine street. and demolished that part which it struck. Robert Linder of You Bet has a habit of vaulting the fence at hie place of residence. The last time he attempted to perform the feat the picket broke and now Mr. Linder is nursing two fractured ribs. In honor of the occasion a large number of the little one’s playmates were invited to a birthday party, which took place upon the large lawn in front ofthe Marsh home on Park Avenue. Mrs. Gault goes to visit eld friends and old scenes of former days, while Mies Downing will take with her the remains of her uncle, the Jate J; W. Downing. They will be interred whore his parents are buried at Sucem, County Kerry, Ireland. Miss Downing will also have a monument erected on the grave. The procession on the morning of the Fourth presented a very beautiful picture with the handsomely. decorated floats and carriages, with the escort: of the military companies and firemen. . The car on which the Goddess of Liberty, Miss Marcella Martin, rode} was of a very pretty design, and the young lady was very neatly gowned in @ costume that was becoming. The six little Misses who attended the Goddess added a pleasing effect to the attractiveness of the float. The float of the Nevada City Fire Department was greatly admired, and with Miss Annie Hicks, attired in an appropriate costume, as their Queen, the float was truly a handsomé/ sight. The firemen were the recipients of mach deserved praise for their efforts in providing such a beautiful feature of the parade. The float of the Grass Valley Fire, Department was also very pretty. Miss Pearl Abearn presented a handsome picture as the Queen of the Grass Vailey ‘Department, and was dressed in an appropriate gown. The painted brayes of Wyoming and Weimer Tribes of Red Men on horseback, with their picturesque costumes indicative of the earliest residents of this grand and glorious. country, were truly representative of the American. The Pocabontas Degree drill team of San Francisco assisted their dasky brethren of the mountains in thie feature and the Red Men are to be congratulated on ue success of their efforts. The military, Pn and kindred organizations in their neat and attractive uniforms aided materially in adding to the beauty of the imposing pagent. The music furnished by the different bands during the day and evenings bad a tendency to enliven the occasion and the patriotic selections were greatly enjoyed by everyone. After the procession was dismissed atthe Anditorium the programme of exercises was held in the spacious hall the bnilding being. crowded to the doors witb an enthusiastic assemblage, and the different numbers were interrapted frequently by applause, ; The singing of the patriotic airs waa particularly pleasing, and the rendition of the ‘‘Star Spangled Banner” by Mies Bertha Webber, was heartily applauded. The address by Hon. Franklin K. Lane, orator of the day, was listened to with earnest attention, and at. its conclusion the. gentleman was loudly cheered.
