This réceptacle is then filled with plaster so as to obtain a perfectly flat surface. On this the outlines of the figures are drawn. The plaster is then cut up into small squares, which are to be removed and gradually replaced by as many small aquares of mosaic of the same size. In. the holes left empty when the plaster is taken away a new plaster made of travertine dust, lime and linseed oll is poured. After three days this new plaster acquires the necessary consistency, and in this the artist sticks the little colored squares. When all the surface of the plaster is covered with these colored pieces of mosaic the whole is washed with sand and water until it becomes.quite smooth, The colored pieces are made of mixtures of different minerals, like -arsenic,. lead, glass, etc. These minerala are placed are obtained by the different degreés of heat, and as many as 28,000 various colors can be obtained. “J Some. Irish Weddings. } Shrove Tuesday weddings in’ Ireland are exceedingly common, and sometimes among the peasantry they are celebrated in strange circumstances. There is a’ story of a young peasant girl being aroused out of bed on the night of Shrove Tuesday to be married before’ midnight to a well to do Irish-Australasian whom she had never seen, though he was known to her parents, who made the match. It
turned out a happy marriage. The young people usually take the matter philosophically, believing that their parents know best.how to make them happy.. This anec®@te is told of a Tipperary girl: “Biddy,” asked ‘her friend, “are ye goin’ off-this Shraff?”: “Muslia, I don’t know that,” said Biddy, “but they’re sittin’ on me upstairs”—meaning that matchmaking was in progress. Another story relates toa number of weddings taking place in a Munster church on Shrove Tuesday. “An’ where’s yer intended, Joe?” one swain was asked. “Begob, Mick, I couldn't tell ye, but I believe she’s up there among the feathers and ribbons in the front row of sates.” He learned who she was when the names were called out. 5 ai ee ee A Bit of Holmes’ Wit, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, the poet and wit, wrote to a committee declinHow Wood Lasts In a Dry Place. A Chinese Secret, When a Chinaman wants to have a tooth drawn ke feels no nervous apprehension of pain, for the excellent reason that he knows his dentist will not inflict any, it is said, The latter simply rubs a secret powder over the aehing tooth, After about five minutes the patient sneezes, and the tooth falls out. The stinging hairs of, the commesg nettle, which ean easily be seen by the naked eye, stand out under the microprickles, highly polished and exquisitely pointed. At their bases these hairs are furnished with bulbous reservoirs, which are charged with formic acid, an acrid, poisonous fluid, which is discharged into the wound after the sharp points have pierced the skin. * Mr. Curtis, in his “Flora,” gives this graphic description of the process: “Placing the foot stalk of a nettle leaf on the stage of a. microscope, I pressed . the bulb: with a blunt pin and found Medical Lake Toilet Soap For.the Scalp asashampoo.
