Gulls Follow.a Ship for the Dinner Scraps
That Go Overboard.
A jolly crew, isa flock of gulls. Thave
watched them by the hour. flying
abreast of the steamer from 10 to 25
feet from the ship's rail, with every eye
‘on the porthole from which refuse of
the cook’s galley is dumped into the
sea, Generally, this grateful event
+ takes*place’ just after meal time, and-a
sake of one mad dash at the scraps that
it expects to be consigned to the ocean.
The gull cannot be fooled with anything short of fresh meat or crackers.
i have tried orange peel and scraps of
nastboard, which T tossed into the air

ssues from-50 throats; as-manypairs
of wings flash in the sunlight; 50 pairs
of red or black legs dangle in the air,
The great event is when the dinner
raps go overboard from the galley.
There is a mad scramble, the air is filled
with hoarse cries, the whole flock settles on the water with uplifted wings,
effort to get all there is for itself. The
steamer poes on, leaving a white, struggling spot-on the water in its wake. But
nresently they start after her again,.
1nd with quick, nervotis strokes they
reach her side, and sail serenely on with
j eras before. The most amazing piece
of business I ever saw was a gull coolly
preeviny itself with its bill while it was
following in ful) flight, apparently
without an effort.
A STRANG E PEOPLE.
Bureau of American Ethnology Sends
Expeditions to Seriland,
During the last iwo years expeditions
sent out by the bureau of Amcricas
ethnology have co’lected many interes!
ing fects about the Seri Indians, who
live in. the western part of the state oi
Sonora, Mexico, along the shere of the
Gulf of California and on the island
of Tiburon in that gulf, The facts have
recently been summarized by Pot. W
J. MeGve, of Washington. From time
immemorial Seriland has °. remained
practically unexplored, partly because
it lies beyond a desert barrier, and
partly on account of the warlike reputation of its tierce and bloodthirsty inhabitants, who “profess a passion for alien
nlood; always gratified,saye when they
rre deterred by fear.” The Seri Inlians. are described as of “superb physique, able to run down fi¢et game and
vapture hali-wild Mexican horses Wwitiout repes or projectiles; able to rur
across (the desert, swaterless:and food-:
iéss, so rapidly as to escape pursuing
horsemen; able to abstain from food
aud water for days; able habitually to
pass barefoot through cactus and over
‘agred rock slopes without thought of
discomfort.” They speak a distinct
language, and strictly practice monogamous marripge. Their hatred for alien
peoples is hereditary, The remitins of
ancient ruins in Seriland indicate that
its inhabitants have always:kept their
country free from foreign invasion, and
that for centures their ‘customs and

WONDERFUL DISCOVERY.
Ruins of the House Inhabited by the Virgin Mary.
The pope and the cardinals are much
interested. in the discovery made b;
Father Esbrasch,superior of the Freney
seminary in Rome, during his.recent
journey in the éast with Father Paulin
supérior of the Lazarist community
tp ated The reported discovery,
says the London Standard, is that of
the' ruins of the house inhabited by
the ‘Blessed ‘Virgin and St. John, after’
the ‘ascension of Christ.
This house, it appears, was not situated at Jerusalem, as has hitherto been
generally believed, but at a place three
miles from Ephesus, where the site is
located in the book containing the revelations of Anne Catherine of Emmerich, a German nun, the account of
whase visions of the various scenes of
Christ’s Passion has been published in
most European languages.
Fathers Esbrasch and Paulinus found
that the site indicated by Anne Catherine of Emmerich is known to the
peasants as Peneghia Capouli, signifying “Place of the Virgin,” and that the
locality exactly correspoiids with the
description given in the nun’s book.
They Wear Paste, Geme.
A curious fact, concerning the festivities over the coronation of the czar is
. the enormous impetus it has given to
the manufacture of paste gems. Russians,.it appears, even of rank and
status, are prone to the weak“ness . known as ‘kleptomania, and
