A HARD MAN TO BEAT.
THE LIVE RAILROAD AGENT IS UP TO}.
ALL SORTS OF TRICKS.
Cireus Penplie Are Pretty Cute Themselves, but This Story Shows How One
Party Was Cleverly Outwitted by the
Bustling Railroader.
‘*There are people who think you
can’t teat a circus man, but I want to
tell ycu tbat the bardest man to do isa
live railroad men.’* ais
Th: old sawdust manager had tried
it. He continued:
“Know where Purcell is in the InNan Territory? Away down at the
jumping ci place-on the Santa Fe road.
The stow had been‘at Purcell. and we
wanted to gct ont in the night fora}—
jong fen. We were going to make a
jamp to Kansas City. Not far from
Purcell is another town, Oklahoma
Sity. At that point a competing road
-with the Santa Ferunsin. We had 500
peo; je.and of course the railroad men
were after us. It was.a big haul, Some
of cur people bought through tickets
from Furceil, and they didn’t worry.
But abant 200, maybe more, of the
crovi that always baggles over a 10
cent dicker concluded to take the Santa
Fe fiom Purcell to Oklahoma City, pay
the short haul, and then take the com.
which were active and full of promises
‘Tien the Santa Fe man fixed it so
the dickerers couldn’t buy any tickets
from Purcell-to Oklazoma, for the train
we were to go on was a epecial. The
dickerers said that was all right; that
they would wait for the regular. In
less than five minutes a bulletin was
slapped on the koard of the station to
the effect that the regular Santa Fe was
12 hours-late. That made the fellows
who wé¥e dickering for a cheaper rate
turn white around their gills.
**In another five minutes I saw a man
on a track velocipede scndding down the
stretch. Every man to his business. So
I thought the railroad people knew
what they were doing, and they did.
That chap on the velocipede was going
down tbe track to flag the regular and
hold it indefinitely. Smart trick, wasn’t
it? Wait till I tell you. There wasa
smarter trick than that.
**When the special got ready to pull
out, the dickerers asked the agent if
they could pay on tho train from Purcell to Oklahcma, and he said ‘Cert.’
