Nevada county is entitled: to twelve SALVEO SY. icigrentcs OA delegates in the State Convention and ¢ the committee made the apportionment ee — Grass Valley Township—Five. How does the Republican record compare with the Democratic promis. sory note? The settlement of the Philippine troubles is on lines which do credit alike to President McKinley’s heart and head. © Fy Well, if China does perish it will ouly be just retribution for the devastation her fire ‘crackers have wrought on the people of the West. The fiscal year closed with some $75,000,000 surplus in the U. S. Treas. ury. This alone ought to be good for an:ther term for the party that saved the money, A Massachusetts court has decided that a bicycle is not a vehicle. But then Massachusetts has other fossils besides its judges. There is George Frisbie Hoar, for instance. New York b&s a new street cleaning apparatus, which, its inventor proudly claims, will do everything except vote. The invention will fail of course, as its deviser has omitted the one thing necessary under a Tammany regime. The foreign trade of the United States is some two biliions a year and we pay two hundred millions to foreigners for carrying it for us. Why not encourage our own shipping at nine millions a year and keep the money at home? The Democrats are pretending that the gold law must stand because the Senate is safely Republican, and «hat it will therefore be all right for the Gold Democrats to vote the Democratic ticket this year. But be not led away, brethren. A victory that would put Bryan in the White H:.use could scarcely fail to make'the Senute a tie aud possibly give it to the par‘y of disbonest money. Foster Prognosticates, 81. Josern, Mo., Juiy 6.—Last bualletin gave forecasts of storm waves to cross continent from 2d to 6th and Bth to 9°h, with cool waves 8d to 7th and Ttb to llth. TITLED BUSINESS FOLK. Lord Londonderry was the first peer to engage in the coal bu_iness. Lord Sudeley has a fiourishing jam business, making a specialty of wholefruit preserves. The great banking house of Baring has produced several] peers; the present head, Lord Revelstoke, shares his life between society and business. The marquis of Bute is one of the wealthiest men in the United Kingdom. He neither rides, races, fishes nor shoots, but he owns the only vineyardin the British isles, Lord Ardilaun and his brother, Lord Iveagh, are the head of the great clan of Guinness, known throughout the business world. They draw salaries bigger than the income of a prime minister. To Lord Harrington belongs the distinction of having been the first peer who actually opened a London shop. He has a fruit store at Charing Cross, and the fruits and flowers grown on his estate are there offered for sale, The countess of Warwick is one of the best known vomen in England, both for her beauty and her inventive genius. She has established ‘a schoo! for needlework anddesigning, and has opened a little shop for the sale of articles made in the school. ,Deatness Cannot be Cured . vy local applications, as they cannct reach the diseased portion ef the ear, ‘There is only one way tocure deafness, and that is by Constitutional remedies tirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its nor. mal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out ot ven are caused by Caterrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of mucous surfaces. It is my belief there never was any intention of fighting free silver in the convention, A lot of gold Democrats went to Kansas City for the purver, but they did not fight it. Rather did they do everything possible to get silver into the platform. These men do not want Bryan elected. They want McKinley,. They knew silver would kill Bryan for certain. That is Oity. It may be severe, but I believe jit is true.” Wife Saves Hor Husband HaYwarps, July 6—Mrs. Obharles Rota saved her husband’s life yesterday at the risk of her own by hurrying to his assistance when. he was being gored by an enraged bull.
