Well, if China does perish it will

on the people of the West.
The fiscal year closed with some
$75,000,000 surplus in the U. S. Treas.

A Massachusetts court has decided

then Massachusetts has other fossils
besides its judges. There is George
Frisbie Hoar, for instance.
New York b&s a new street cleaning
apparatus, which, its inventor proudly
claims, will do everything except vote.
The invention will fail of course, as its
deviser has omitted the one thing
necessary under a Tammany regime.
The foreign trade of the United
States is some two biliions a year and
we pay two hundred millions to foreigners for carrying it for us. Why not
encourage our own shipping at nine
millions a year and keep the money at
home?
The Democrats are pretending that
the gold law must stand because the
Senate is safely Republican, and «hat
it will therefore be all right for the
Gold Democrats to vote the Democratic ticket this year. But be not led
away, brethren. A victory that would
put Bryan in the White H:.use could
scarcely fail to make'the Senute a tie
aud possibly give it to the par‘y of disbonest money.

discussing the Kansas City -platform
witha Bulletin correspondent ‘oday,
sdid: “I fully expected all the time
that the Democrats would put a ~freesilver plank in their platform, though,
heard a good deal about the fight
again-t this plank by New Yorkers and
others. It is my belief there never was
any intention of fighting free silver in
the convention, A lot of gold Democrats went to Kansas City for the purver, but they did not fight it. Rather
did they do everything possible to get
silver into the platform. These men
do not want Bryan elected. They
want McKinley,. They knew silver
would kill Bryan for certain. That is
Oity. It may be severe, but I believe
jit is true.”

moment was attacked and wounded
about the left leg and face. He was in
