Me Daily Transeript, PUBLISHED AT’ Nevada City, Nevada County, * CALIFORNIA. _ Brown & Cars, . .Proprietors. FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 1885. A MAXIMILIAN DICTATOR. Barclay Henley, the only Democratic Congressman from this State, is attempting to force President Cleveland’to make the Federal appointments to suit him,. claiming that he alone should be recognized in the matter. His opponents in the Democratic ranks ~~ do not like such doings, and they are after him with a bit of history that ought to knock his pins from under him, A dispatch from ~~Washington says; Justice Field has not Jacked the courage to avow his opinion whenever he has been asked; as to Mr Henley, who is vain enough to believe that he can be elected to the United States Senate, he stands on a vol-cano, and he may-find it impossi-. ble to convince the House of Representatives next winter that he is a citizen of the United States and eligible to a seat in that body. An investigation, now going on, will probably result in showing that in 1864 Henley emigrated to Mexico, and soon afterward took ’ an oath of allegiance to the Maximilian Government, thus forfeiting his American citizenship; and that since he returned to the ~United States he has taken no steps to become a naturalized citizen under its laws: If this state of affairs is disclosed by the investigation, Mr. Henley will cease to be a disturbing element in California State politics for several years at least. There is still another dark cloud overhanging his political fortune. For tan years or more he and his wrother have held forcible and unlawful possession of some 2,800 acres of land which belonged to the Indians of the Round Valley Reserevation in California. This land is used as a sheep and cattle ranch, and Henley has made a good deal of money out of it. The Reservation cgn_._tains about 100,000 acres, and a recent report by the Senate Com=-. -— mittee on Indian Affairs shows that since 1873 Henley and eight or ten other white men have occupied and used all of it, except a few hundred acres, without paying the Indians one dollar. The Committee reported that responsible men stood ready to pay the Indians $30,000 a year for the privileges.which the Henley brothers and other trespassers-have enjoyed for adozen years without the payment of a dollar. During that period the Government has expended $241,817 for the support of the Indians, who by the unlawful occupancy of their own lands Lave been deprived of the means of supporting themselves. Moreover, _ the Indian Bureau has paid to the “trespassers thousands of dollars a-year for beef raised and fattened On these lands. Do you wonder now that Henley ‘and his friends are so anxious to have their own men appointed as Indian Agents and land officers in California? The foregoing publication is a boom in the camp of radicals. It is the topic of conversation in Government and. politicat—circles generally, and it is conceded that it puts the assailants of Justice Field on the -defensive, closing their mouths until they clear away these ugly accusations. Saran ALTHEA is posing as a martyr. Her going to jail for contempt of Court is another act in the long melo-drama in which she has sustained the leading part. But she has a Tartar to deal w:th in Judge Sawyer, and she will finally be forced to surrender. Her refusal to submit the signatures in question to a scientific ink .test is suspicious. Nothing more is required than for the expert to remove a few particles of ink “from the writing, leaving the} documents, for all practical purposes, absolutely intact. Sarah may as well face the music at once. ORAZY ON RAILROADS. Scarcely’a day passes that the San Francisco Chronicle is not harping upon railroads. It is . railroads from one week’s end to another, and the bulk ofits charges against railroads are made up It evidently has one man employed to write upon the subject “of railtoads-_ ff the hireling can find no-definite charges to make against railroads, it is his. duty to write up a mess of lieson rajlroads. The people are getting tired of its constant harpings on railroads, and they would like to have about one Wweek’s réest’on railroads, But we presume there will be no rest on railroads until Mike De Young, is satisfied that he has ruined all the rai'roads in the land. GeneraL GRant’s dentist expresses the opinion that the disease from which—theGeneral is now suffer'ng is the result of long continued: irritation from broken and decayed teeth, and not smoking. He hopes that the case may be asolemn warning to all those advancingin years against the tol‘erance of any rough surfaces in their mouths, by which the tongue or cheek maybe kept in a state of constant irritation. That functionary says: Postal Clerks who have become efficient and valuable men, against “Railway whom no just complaint of neglect, inattention,or want of fidelity honesty or efficiency brought, and who have not turned their attontion to political labors during their service, need have no fear of being disturbed so long as they continue to render meritori018 and faithful service.” Of course, being good Republicans, they come fully up to the standard required by the Postmaster General, and therefore there will be no changes made.
